Supreme Award Puts ‘Stamp Of Approval 9 On Opinions About Beef Champion ANDY ANDREWS Lancaster Farming Staff HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) Bill Shoemaker, who on a snow-blanketed Monday held the banner for his supreme champion bull of the beef open show at the Farm Show, spoke on Tuesday about what it takes to win a championship. Shoemaker said that genetics and management were largely involved in providing a supreme champion, a Simmental senior bull from his purebred stock operation. Maple Cove Breeders in Buffalo Mills. Shoemaker exhibited his 2-ycar-old bull, Shoemaker’s Highway Dream Jet (S: Highway man 33T, D: Dream Girl II), to the grand champion Simmental and supreme bull honors on Monday. “We’ve had a number of grand champion bulls at Farm Shows in years past,” said Shoemaker. Shoemaker maintains about 150 head of Simmentals on his Buffalo Mills farm. Pan of his business in selling purebred embryos, about 10 per cent of which are exported to South America for pure seedstock and commercial cow/calf operations. He said that, recently, two bulls from his herd placed in the top five at the Penn State bull test Several also topped the Cornell, N.Y. bull test, and a bull that topped six pounds per day of gain did well at the Ohio lest. Shoemaker uses an extension computer system to keep track of herd genetics. A board member of the Pennsylvania Simmental Association, Shoemaker has served as a two time-president of the state association and is a mem ber of the-National Simmental Association. Shoemaker said the Farm Show is important because it provides a way to compare his stock to a large number of other animals. The judges’ decision during the competition “puts a stamp of approval on your own opinion,” he said, about which animal is chosen supreme champion. Supreme champion heifer of the beef show open competition was awarded to Workland and Cattle Company, Uniontown, for a 15-month old Angus senior heifer calf champion. The champion placed high at the Keystone Inter national Livestock Exposition (KILE) last October at the Farm Show Complex. For Jim Work, Worland and Cattle Company, this is his 60th consecutive year of attendance at the Farm Show. Helping to exhibit the supreme champion heifer was Keith Rook er, a Workland employee, who said that “taking care of the heifers and getting the potential out of them” contributes to a supreme champion. Workland travels to several regional and national shows m addition to Farm Show. FARM SHOW BEEF SHOW OPEN SHOW RESULTS ANGUS JUNIOR HEIFER CALVES, MAY 1995 AND AFTER- 1 Jennifer Dunleavy. 2.
