Barbara’s victory was not with
out a price. The day before the con
test, she baked three cakes that
flopped before she discovered the
culprit was outdated baking soda.
“Fortunately my husband is a
real cake eater,” said Barbara who

admits to trying 20 different
recipes before settling on the prize
winner. Then she tried several dif
ferent types of frosting, which her
husband and the hairdresses at her
shop sampled before voting peanut
butter frosting as the crowning
combination.
Barbara etched a chocolate but
terfly from Hershey’s Kisses and
semi-sweet chocolate chips to hov
er over the heavenly creation.
Winning the blue ribbon
brought with it a weekend trip for
four at the Hershey Resort and
Conference Center in Hershey.
Second place went to Cindy
Bruce of West Chester. Her Cho
colate Fudge Turtle Cake sounds
fabulous, but Cindy said that neith
er she nor her family has ever
sampled it
“I’d like to taste it,” said both
husband Bob and 11-year-old son
Mike. But they have no promises
of one from Cindy who bakes for
others but has no time to bake for
her own family.
She examined many recipes
before selecting the one to bake for
the contest. She then chose a car
amel sauce and a favorite frosting
to lather on the cake.
Third prize was captured by
Georgia Voce of Breezewood.
Two years ago, she qualified for
state competition but did not win.
Determined to qualify again,
Geogia entered numerous fairs.
She used the same recipe and gar
nered three first-place wins, flvp
second-place wins, and a third
place.
