However, excessive ingredients. amounts of sugar in the rumen may lead to rapid fermentation and a lowering of pH which will be detrimental to rumen function and digestion of nutrients- Processing advances now make it possible to blend many different ingredients together into a variety of products designed to increase dairy feeding options. While research data on specific new products may be somewhat sparse, there is a fairly good base of research on the effects of molasses and more specifically sugar in dairy rations. Microbial protein yields have been shown to be directly related to the supply of fermentable car bohydrate in the rumen. Starch degradation from cereal grains can vary with processing, but sugar (from molasses in liquid supplements) is readily fermented in the rumen. In some studies, feeding addi tional sugar (either in the form of cane molasses or as sucrose) increased feed intake, organic mem §? W MFG. Rations which contain high levels of good quality haylage or pasture are highest in ruminally degraded protein and are most likely to benefit from the addition of sugar. Adding a source of sugar to the ration may result in more of the ruminally degraded protein being utilized resulting in less nitrogen wastage, increased microbial pro tein production and potentially increased milk yields. 125 King Court/ Hollander Rd. Feeds, or Bales Editor: Old and long-awaited dreams of a better home are often started only to be halted, never to be com pleted, simply due to a visit from the tax assessor. In our area this very moment, there is a grand mother and a grandfather, both very honest, very kind, very hard working individuals and both now living on a fixed retirement in come. Today their dream house stands only partially built, solely because of this thing called fair property taxing. About 18 years ago, with their last child near graduation, they felt they might finally be able to move out of the old run-down farm house and into a new one, but the more they planned and figured, the farther out of reach their new home became. That is until they hit upon the idea of building the house at the rate of a small affordable amount each month. On a month to month basis they felt sure they could com plete the house prior to their retire ment and throughout the next three years of 1977,1978, and 1979 they built what they could with their spare time and money. So thrifty were and are these two that they had even used a substantial amount of salvaged shipping 2 by 4’s, sal vaged boards, and economy or sec onds 2 by 4’s for the interior peti tions. In 1979, while feeling rather proud of what they had accom plished thus far, the tax assessor paid them another of his numerous visits. With the house roughly one third completed, please note the roughly one-third completed, the tax assessor gave these two honest, hard working, and ingenious indi viduals a real rewarding slap in the face by arrogantly stating. “Of course you realize that you have exceeded your legal allotted con struction period. By law you must now be taxed at 80 percent of the estimated totally completed value of this house.” Naturally this just flabbergasted these two industri ous individuals to no end. How could any supposedly fair and equal taxing law be so totally unfair and just downright dishon- 880 SERIES PORTABLE BALE ELEVATOR & MOW CONVEYOR SYSTEM Farm Forum Lancaster Farming, Saturday, Decamber 9, 1995-A3l age.
