Learn The ‘How And Why 9 Of Sheep Pregnancy Diagnosis Steven L. MilUken, VMD Lititz In the past, diagnosis of preg nancy in sheep was more of an art than science. Most methods proved to be either inaccurate, impractical, or were cost- or time prohibitive. With the availability of real-time ultrasound, early pregnancy diagnosis in sheep is both accurate and an economically valuable management tool. Using transabdominal ultra sound, pregnancy can be diag nosed in sheep as early as 30 days of gestation. Visualization of the fetus(es) is most accurate between 4S and 100 days of gestation. However, the ideal time to count the number of fetuses is between 4S and 75 days of gesta- NOVEMBER SAT. NOV. 25 • 9AM Anti ques, elect organ, collecti bles & household goods. Estate of Ruth H. Pregnan cy can still be diagnosed after 100 days but fetal size is too large to allow distinction of multiple fetuses. Accuracy of pregnancy diagno sis in sheep is in the range of 97-100 percent with an exper ienced ultrasound operator. Eco nomically, early diagnosis of pregnancy in sheep can help save on feed costs and allow for better management of ewes with multi ple fetuses. Open ewes can be either rebred or culled early in the season to help reduce feed costs. Animals with one or multiple fetuses can be separated to better utilize feed and decrease neonatal losses. It will be held in conjunction with Simmental cattle activities at the prestigious Dixie National Livestock Show. “We want to invite all inter ested ASA members to attend,” said ASA Executive Vice Presi dent Brian G. Kitchen. “There are several important issues to be dis cussed during the meeting, and there is also a full schedule of Simmental and Simbrah cattle activities at the Dixie National Show. We are very grateful to the Mississippi Simmental/Simbrah Association (ASA) for their hospitality." In a re cent letter to Assistant Secretary for OS HA Joseph Dear, American Feed Industry Association (APIA) director of feed production Brian Bursiek said. “AHA believes the economic impact of OSHA’s draft Ergonomic Protection Standard far outweighs the benefits gained.” By proposing a new er gonomic standard, OSHA is re sponding to what it claims are sig nificant increases in reported cas es of ergonomic disorders in the aggregate workplace over the past decade. According to an analysis by the AHA Safety & Health Commit tee, which represents the associa tion’s more than 700 members, the OSHA ergonomic proposal would cost the feed industry a minimum of $783 million in start-up costs and $ll2 million annually thereaf ter. An estimated 7,000 feed indus try employees (11.7 percent of all production jobs in the industry) would lose their jobs due' to new automation requirements in line with the changing standard. Now Pam’s responsibilities, in addition to being a mother her self,. include full-time milking, cow and calf care, and making decisions about the genetics of the herd. She credited her grandfather, Maynard, with instilling the work sis in sheep can be an important tool in the reproductive manage ment of your sheep flock for pro fit It can also be used similarly in goats. Convention Jackson meeting, will take place on Feb. 10. The schedule will conclude with an awards breakfast on Sun day morning, Feb. 11. All cattle activities are planned and coordinated under the super vision and direction of the MSSA. The Junior Show is scheduled for Feb, 7, and the sale will be held Feb. 11. The Open Simmental and Simbrah shows will be held Feb. 12. The Ramada Coliseum, located at 400 Greymont Avenue, serves as convention headquarters. Rooms may be reserved by tele phoning (601) 969-2141 and referring to the ASA room block. It will be the second time that ASA has held its annual conven tion in Jackson. The 1978 meeting was also held there. Additional convention informa tion may be obtained by calling ASA at (406) 587-4531. dition, other more important safe ty programs would suffer as re sources are siphoned off to com ply with the ergonomics standard. AFIA’s feed industry analysis determined that cumulative trau ma disorders (CTD) occur in ap proximately two cases per five million man-hours worked. This calculates to a frequency rate of 0.08 cases per 100 man-years. Considering the extremely low rate of annual CTD cases in the feed industry, APIA believes the cost of compliance with the pro posed ergonomic standard is not justified. Additional hidden costs will be incurred by industry as they are passed along from the medical community. AHA believes many physicians who would be diagno sing and treating ergonomic disor ders do not have sufficient train ing to distinguish between work related and non-work-related ill nesses or traumas. Costs of medi cal personnel training, and on-site medical attention at plant facilities will be passed along to industry. I wouldn’t leave the farm.” Getting the cows ready to show also falls under Pam’s domain. Her children and her sisters’ are the fourth generation to be involved in 4-H showing cows. Every child has at least one ani mal, and all but the youngest two are in 4-H.
