West Snyder FFA Competes in Fall Contests Members of the West Snyder FFA Chapter participated in and hosted the SUN Area FFA dairy and livestock judging contest held in late September and in the SUN Area forestry, land judging, and tractor driving contests held in October at Line Mountain High School. In the dairy judging contest, Larry Snook and Lori Carper placed fust and second respective ly with blue ribbons. Ben Boonie and Jennifer Woodling also won blue ribbons. Jeremy Hackenberg and Steve Opdyke won red rib bons. In the dairy judging team placings. West Snyder team B consisting, of Lori Carper, Ben Boonie, and Jennifer Woodling won first while team A, consisting of Steve Opdyke, Jeremy Hacken berg, and Larry Snook placed third. In livestock judging, Luke Zerby won first place with a blue ribbon and Michele Fetterolf placedfourth also with a blue rib bon. Red ribbon team members included Elizabeth Hollenbach and Joshua Heeter, while Jeremy Brininger won a white ribbon. In the tractor driving contest, Doug Boop and Steve Opdyke placed with red ribbons. Luke Zerby and Michele Fetterolf each brought home red ribbons while Jodi Moist and Elizabeth Hollenbach received white ribbons. Joshua Heeter was the top rated West Snyder member in the fore stry contest, winning a blue ribbon for his efforts. David Stahl and Jeremy Brininger each won ted ribbons and John Walter and Jeremy Hackenberg placed in the white ribbon category. Grassland FFA at Big E The Eastern States Exposition was held Sept. 15-17 in Spring- Held, Mass. The Grassland FFA poultry team attending the Big E was Cory Simo, Ken Martin, and Keith Sauder. The team was awarded third, place in the Eastern states. Indivi dual scores were Cory Simo sixth, Ken Martin ninth, and Keith Saud er thirteenth. During the trip the FFA met with the state officers and attended (he awards banquet, where Pennsylvania FFA won the Big E banner for winning the most , contests. FFA Trap Shoot The Lancaster County FFA Trap Shoot was held Oct. 2 at the Southeastern Lancaster County Sportsmen Club. The Grassland FFA team, which placed second in the coun ty, consisted of Derrick Weaver, Greg Yoder, Mike Horst, Jason Mountz, and Brian Beck. The other award given to the chapter this year was the most improved shooter award given to Cory Simo, shooting 25 more birds than last year. Also shooting this year were teachers Mr. Lauf fer and Mr. Seibert York County FFA Names Scholarship Winner Tracey L. Willwert, the daught er of John and Brenda Willwert of Red Lion, has been selected by the York County Vocational Agricul tural Teachers Association to receive the scholarship, which is given in memory of Carroll F. Thompson who was formerly a vocational agricultural teacher at Spring Grove and Dover high schools. WUlwort is a 1994 graduate of the Red Lion Area High School and has completed four years of agricultural education. She is studying accounting and manage ment at the Yorktowne Business Institute with plans of becoming a bookkeeper and part owner of a dairy farm. Willwert has participated in the horse judging contest on the coun ty level and has received a bronze award in the Pennsylvania FFA horse judging contest held at Penn State. She has also received awards in numerous other contests such as livestock judging, creed speaking, and project record book contests on the county, regional, and state levels of competition. Willwert has exhibited swine at the York Fair and sheep at both the York Fair and the Pennsylva nia Farm Show. Tracey served as president of the Red Lion Area FFA Chapter for two years after serving as chapter reporter and chapter sec retary. She served in the capacity of reporter of the York County FFA organization for a year. Tra cey received the Star in Agricul tural Production award for the South Central Region of the FFA in Pennsylvania in 1994, the DeKalb Agricultural Achieve ment Award in 1994, the Kiwanis Club Outstanding FFA Girl of York County in 1993, and the York County FFA Star White Rose Degree award in 1992. Tra cey has attened local area leader ship conferences, the PA FFA State Legislative Leadership con ference, and the PA FFA and National FFA Conventions. Clarion County Builds 90-Foot Banana Split Melanie Snyder, the 1995-96 Clarion-Venango Dairy Princess, promoted the dairy industry by making a 90-foot banana split on Main Street, Clarion, before the Autumn Leaf Parade on Saturday, October 14.
