Great Pumpkin Roundup DOYLESTOWN (Bucks Co.) —Bucks County 4-H recently held its annual Great Pumpkin Round-Up. The Pumpkin Project is open to all youth between the ages of 8-19 in Bucks County. Youth receive seeds, plants, a 4-H project book, and several newslet ters throughout the growing sea son. At harvest time participants can enter any of the various clas ses with their pumpkin creations. Categories were: largest pumpkin, most uniform pair of pumpkins, best carved face, best painted face, and best pumpkin recipes includ ing sub-divisons for desserts and non-desserts. Each year the Burpee Seed Company donates a variety of fresh pumpkin seeds for the Bucks County 4-H program. Ken Lud wig, head of commercial seed sales for Burpee Seeds, and Ches ter Williams, a Bucks County Cooperative Extension master gardener, acted as the judges for the Great Pumpkin Round-Up held at the Churchville Nature Center’s Annual Pumpkin Festival. The largest pumpkin was grown by 11-year-old Gene Bonner from the Oaikford 4-H club. His pump kin weighed in at 89*/i lbs. and was grown from Burpee Prizewin ner seed. Second place went to Scott Hibbs from Yardley, Julia Krout from the Hilltown 4-H club placed third. Best carved face went to nine year-old Emily Merritt of the Mil ford 4-H club. Runner-up in this category was Heather Gordon from the Yardley 4-H club. Best painted face was won by eight-year-old Allison Ball from the Milford 4-H club. Aloha Pumpkin Cake submitted by Chris Christensen 1 2/3 cups sugar 1 cup salad oil 4 eggs beaten 1 1/2 cups cooked pumpkin 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. baking powder 2 cups flour 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 cup chopped nuts 1/2 cup flaked coconut 1/2 cup pineapple, crushed and drained Beat together sugar and oil. Mix in eggs and pumpkin. Stir in dry ingredients. Then add nuts and coconut Pour into greased oblong pan and bake in 350 F oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until cake tests done. Frost with cream cheese icing. Cream Cheese Icing 1/4 stick butter 8 oz. package cream cheese 3 cups confectionary sugar 1/4 cup chopped nuts 1/2 cup flaked coconut 1 teaspoon vanilla Cream butter and cream cheese.
