Clip and Save These Dates
HARRISBURG (Dauphin
Co.) —Professional photographs
are an important merchandising
tool for dairy animals, and offer a
permanent Judy B]|pk, Agri-
Graphics Ltd. photographer, told
participants at a seminar at the
Pennsylvania All-American Dairy
Show in Harrisburg this week that
“seeing is believing. A photo
graph will show exactly how an
animal looks, and it should be
perfect”
Black said preparation is the
key to a successful photo session.
At shows, the cow already looks
her best for the showing judge; at
the farm it may mean extra work.
Cleanliness is the first consider

washing a must—even in winter.
She said animals should be
clipped as they would be for a
show, including the head and neck
with careful concern for blending,
udder and legs. She noted that the
purpose of clipping is to enhance
the appearance of the animal.

It is vitally important that an
animal be broken to halter. Black
said, “You must teach an animal
respect for the halter if they are
not show animals."
She recommends using a black
halter when picturing Holsteins;
tan for Guernseys and Jerseys. She
said there should be a thin nose
band on the halter to show theani
mal at its best advantage.
Another important step is to
“bag” the cow appropriately.
Since the udder should be fell at
the time of the photograph, it is
necessary to plan the appropriate
time for milking the cow.
Black said that while getting the
animal ready is the owner’s
responsibility, the photographer
will choose the appropriate spot
for the actual photograph, taking
into account the background and

For any photo shoot, a mini

Black pointed out. One person

front feet, one holds the tail and
someone must capture the ani

Black said she also likes to use
