Mindy was previously chosen as supreme champion of the 1995 Maryland State Fair. At two years and seven months of age, her milk production for 365 days was 16,020 pounds. A photo graph will show exactly how an animal looks, and it should be perfect” Black said preparation is the key to a successful photo session. At shows, the cow already looks her best for the showing judge; at the farm it may mean extra work. Cleanliness is the first consider ation, Black said, with complete washing a must—even in winter. She said animals should be clipped as they would be for a show, including the head and neck with careful concern for blending, udder and legs. She noted that the purpose of clipping is to enhance the appearance of the animal. Black said, “You must teach an animal respect for the halter if they are not show animals." She recommends using a black halter when picturing Holsteins; tan for Guernseys and Jerseys. She said there should be a thin nose band on the halter to show theani mal at its best advantage. Another important step is to “bag” the cow appropriately. Since the udder should be fell at the time of the photograph, it is necessary to plan the appropriate time for milking the cow.
