    4-H Holds Only Agricultural Fair
NEWTOWN SQUARE (Dela
ware Co.) —Delaware County, for
as urban as it is, still has one, but
only one, agricultural fair. The
Delaware County 4-H Fair was
held recently at the 4-H Farm and
Educational Center on the property
of the Garrett-Williamson Founda
tion at Newtown Square.
According to C. R. Bryan, Jr.
Extension 4-H agent, the two-day
event featured livestock and poul
try shows, vegetable and 4-H pro
ject judging, pet care demonstra
tions, hay rides, refreshments, and
fun for the whole family.
The Saturday afternoon auction
included poultry, lambs, eggs,
vegetables and honey raised by
4-H members, and ended with a
record breaking price of $775 paid
by Frank C. Videon, of Newtown
Square for the 235-pound market
hog raised by Kerry Boody of
Newtown Square. Videon donated
the hog back to 4-H. The reserve
champion market hog shown by
Brenda MacPhail of Newtown
Square was purchased for $5OO by
Medford’s Meats in Chester.
The Celebrity Tuikey Show
Saturday moiling was won by
Pauline Bogaert, writer for the Phi
ladelphia Inquirer. Another parti
cipant in that show was Frank
Steams, southast regional director
for the Pennsylvania Department
of Agriculture. Stearns and
Bogeart also presented some of the
awards to winners in the livestock
show.
The 4-H program is heavily
dependent on adult volunteers in
its educational efforts with the
more than 5,000 4-H members in
Delaware County. The 4-H Fair is
no exception. Those volunteers
