4-H Holds Only Agricultural Fair NEWTOWN SQUARE (Dela ware Co.) —Delaware County, for as urban as it is, still has one, but only one, agricultural fair. The Delaware County 4-H Fair was held recently at the 4-H Farm and Educational Center on the property of the Garrett-Williamson Founda tion at Newtown Square. According to C. R. Bryan, Jr. Extension 4-H agent, the two-day event featured livestock and poul try shows, vegetable and 4-H pro ject judging, pet care demonstra tions, hay rides, refreshments, and fun for the whole family. The Saturday afternoon auction included poultry, lambs, eggs, vegetables and honey raised by 4-H members, and ended with a record breaking price of $775 paid by Frank C. Videon, of Newtown Square for the 235-pound market hog raised by Kerry Boody of Newtown Square. Videon donated the hog back to 4-H. The reserve champion market hog shown by Brenda MacPhail of Newtown Square was purchased for $5OO by Medford’s Meats in Chester. The Celebrity Tuikey Show Saturday moiling was won by Pauline Bogaert, writer for the Phi ladelphia Inquirer. Another parti cipant in that show was Frank Steams, southast regional director for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Stearns and Bogeart also presented some of the awards to winners in the livestock show. The 4-H program is heavily dependent on adult volunteers in its educational efforts with the more than 5,000 4-H members in Delaware County. The 4-H Fair is no exception. Those volunteers who headed up fair activities included Alan McClellan, Aston; Debbie Murphy, Collingdale; Theresa Muller, Drexel Hill; Judi Bissinger, Marple Township; Sherry Ratner, Edgemont; Leslie Ruzowicz, Cathy MacPhail, Judith Boody and Jared Armington, Newtown Square; Marcy Hender son, Helen Wright, Bob and Debbie Davis, Springfield; Richard Harris, Nether Provi dence; and Nancy Botella, Thom bury Township. All volunteers are under the direction of the paid 4-H At Warren 4-H Dairy Show YOUNGSVILLE (Warren Co.) The supreme grand champion of the Warren County Junior Dairy Show was shown by Chris topher Vanco of Bear Lake. Vanco’s senior 3-year-old Hol stein cow, “Ginger Snap,” was grand champion of the Holstein breed. Other owners and their breed champions that competed in the supreme selection were: Richard Gilkinson Jr. of Lander with a Brown Swiss senior 3-year-old cow; Peter Vanco of Bear Lake with a Jersey senior 3-year-old cow; Toni Gilkinson of Lander with a Milking Shorthorn junior 2-year-old cow; and Wendy Gil kinson of Lander with an Ayrshire 5-year-old cow. Each champion owner was pre sented with a trophy sponsored by David Brown and Coba Select Sires. The supreme champion won a trophy sponsored by Enos Mill ing of Sugar Grove. , The reserve grand champion of the Brown Swiss show was a 4-year-old cow shown by Wendy Gilkinson of Lander. Wendy also won reserve junior champion and The Delaware County 4-H Fair Included a hog showman ship competition. Adam Murphy also won the Mardi Gras class. Champion and reserve champ ion honors in the 4-H project com petition were awarded to Erin Yoder, Newtown Square for veter inary science; David Henderson, Springfield for small engines; Emily and Rob Davis for beekeep ing; Jackie Van Patton, Ridley and David Murphy, Collingdale for vegetables; Michele McClellan, Aston and Emily and Rob Davis, Springfield for pet care; and Katie Siddons, Middletown Twp., Ginger Snap Supreme best animal owned and bred with a senior calf. Richard Gilkinson Jr. showed a senior calf for junior champion honors. In the Holstein show, Cody Hitchcock of Lander showed his junior yearling Heifer to junior champion honors. Sarah Lindell of Lander won reserve junior champion honors with a junior calf. Joe Nickerson of Corry won reserve grand champion honors with a senior 2-year-old cow. The best Holstein bred and owned was a juniot 3-year-old owned by Recca Gruber of Sugar Grove. Gruber also had the top daughter/dam entry in the show. A Jersey senior calf shown by Kimberly Kalika of Corry won junior champion. Brian Hazelet of Columbus was reserve junior champion with a Jersey intermedi ate calf. Along with Peter Vanco's grand champion Jersey cow, he had the reserve grand champion and best bred and owned animal with a Jersey junior 2-year-old cow. The top daughter/daim entry was shown by Tiffany Gilkinson of Lander. Carrie Swanson of Russell had Michele Shuman, Lansdowne, Sasha Kinney, Drexel Hill and Beverly Menghetti, Thombury Twp. for horse. Poultry championships went to Michael McClellan, Aston, Katie Wetzel, Upper Providence, Alex Oleykowski, Upper Darby and Jonathan Van Patton, Ridley Township. In the sheep show Joan Harris, Nether Providence, Katlyn Novella, Sharon Hill, David Mur phy, Collingdale, Melina Prossc da, Yeadon, Hope Toogood, Mid dletown Twp., Claire Barrett and Andrea Oleykowski of Upper Dar by, and Ben and Meredith Ruzoaicz of Newtown Square were all pinned champions. Market hog champions were: Kerry and Karen Boody, Brenda McPhail. Alania Brescia, and Chase Armington of Newtown Square; Joan Harris of Nether Pro vidence, Haifa Aldorasi of Ridley Twp., Brian Albany and Rob Davis of Springfield, and Tim Houser of Marple Twp. many Ayrshire champions. Her senior calf won junior champion, reserve grand champion, and best animal bred and owned. She also won reserve junior champion with an intermediate calf. The Milking Shorthorn junior champion was shown by Tiffany Gilkinson. Her junior yearling also won reserve grand champion. Richard Gilkinson Jr. won reserve junior champion with an inter mediate yearling heifer and re serve senior champion with a junior 2-year-old. All of the 4-H dairy club mem bers participated in the showman ship competition. In the junior di vision (ages 8-11), John Nicker son of Corry was first. Other blue award winners were Kimberly Ka lika, Kelsi Wilcox, and Crystal Gruber. Red awards went to Brian Hazelet, Lindsey Burch, Cody Hitchcock, Toni Gilkinson, and Jesse Curtis. White awards were earned by Robert Hazelet, Ben Blair, and Terry Arison. The intermediate showmanship group (ages 12-14) was topped by Melinda Brown of Bear Lake.
