Correspondent SHIPPENSBURG (Cumber land Co.)—Rebecca Comman of Carlisle really captured her share of the awards during the Cumber land County 4-H Dairy Roundup held at the Shippensburg Fairgrounds. Cornman took the grand champion title in the Jersey com petition during the roundup with her junior 3-year-old Justa-Beauty GM Jeannette, then won the reserve grand champion spot for the breed with her junior 2-year old JustA-Beauty Juno Taffi. After that, her fall calf Three Springs O.T. Jet-EXP won the grand champion award for the Milking Shorthorns. The Ayrshire grand champion was Michelle Ocker of Shippens burg, who won with her 4-year- Brian Nailer had the grand and the Junior champion in the Guernsey competition. The Holstein reserve grand champion was Bradley Varner of Carlisle and his cow in the 6 years old and older class Le-Ida Astro Jet Lace-Twin. In die showing and fitting com petition, Matthew Day of Ship pensburg was the winner in die championship and senior class. The intermediate showmand championship went to Dawn Ickes of Newville. The winner in the junior showman event was Aaron Comman. Brosius recently announced the formation of a board to review and recommend food handler certifi cation programs for supervisory personnel in the food and bever age industry. Rebecca Comman. would help to ensure that the per sonnel are properly trained in safe food handling practices. “This is the first time in history that the department has had the complete responsibility for the safety of food from the farmer’s field to the consumer’s table.” Brosius said. “Food handler certi fication programs will help pro vide added protection for consum ers with as Utile regulatory burden on the industry as possible. As part of a joint effort between department officials and the food industry, legislation was develop ed to address food handler certifi cation. Act 131 of 1994, which in cludes the Food Employee Certifi cation Act, provides for manda tory food handler certification in food establishments by the year 2001. Food establishments include retail food stores and public eating and drinking places. The act created the state Food Employee Certification Advisory Board. The board includes representa tives of the food industry and re lated organizations. Board mem bers will serve terms to two, three or four years. Food establishment employees shall be certified by the depart ment following the completion of industry-specific training pro grams recommended by the advi sory board and approved by the department. Local regulatory certification Sign-Up Meeting Set WAKEFIELD (Lancaster Co.) —A Clean and Green educational and sign-up meeting is scheduled Tuesday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. here at the Grange Hall. programs established prior to Sept. 1. 1994 may remain in ef fect The initial certification of food handlers will be in effect for five years. Renewal of certification will be based on the attendance of courses recommended by the ad visory board and approved by the department The board’s working groups will continue to examine the certi fication issue. The next meeting of the full board is scheduled for No vember. Lancaster County Extension Director John Schwartz and Terry Kauffman, Lancaster County com missioner, will provide informa tion about the Clean and Green program for those who attend the free program.
