Correspondent SHIPPENSBURG (Cumber land Co.) —Steven Comman of Carlisle was the oldest winner and Sarah Wickard of Shippensburg was the youngest during the Color Breed Showing and Fitting Con test at the Shippensburg Fair. Comman, 41, won his distinc tion by emerging as the victor in the adult class of the contest The award for that class was sponsored by the Cumberland Valley Jersey Breeders. Wickard was the first place winner in the kiddie class, a first time event that was open to child ren under age 8. Lonnie and Vicki Wickard sponsored the trophy for that class. All the other trophies for the contest were sponsored by John and Linda Ocker and family. The senior division winner was Richard Martin of Chambersburg. Bradley Reichard, also of Cham bersburg, took second, while Julie Dyarman captured third. The competition in the interme diate division saw Barbara Reich ard of Chambersburg emerge as the first-place winner. Becky Cornman of Carlisle took the second place spot in that division. The third place position was won by Curtis Reichard of Chambersburg. In the junior division, Aaron Cornman of Carlisle finished first and Matthew Reichard of Cham bersburg finished in second. Third Of Carroll County Show JOANNE E. MORVAY Maryland Correspondent WESTMINSTER. Md.— Extreme heat and humidity forced many competitors to leave their cows at home, but there was still a good turnout for the Dairy Show at Carroll County’s 4-H/FFA Fair. The show was held Aug. 4 at the annual fair in Westminster. The judge was Mike lager. The show was dedicated to the memory of Sidney Lease, a Union Bridge dairyman who passed away earlier this summer. Lease was a longtime supporter of the dairy show and the fair. Jeff, the only child of Richard and Kathleen Sutton, has been showing cows since he was eight* This year has been especially good for him, however. He placed well at the district show earlier in the summer and that “started a little momentum that carried me into the fair,” he said. “I stuck to the same old stuff,” Jeff said. “But I’ve learned a lot over the years, especially from watching older people (show).** Last year, Jeff won grand champion at the county fair. And his cow May previously won reserve All Maryland and reserve junior All Maryland honors. But Jeff has never done well in fitting and showing. This year’s win “was a real surprise to me,” he said. Jeff said the awards don’t mean as much to him as the competition itself, however. “I like the competition,” he js the winner of the kiddle class at the showing and fitting competition. Sponsor of the trophy was Lonnie and Vicki Wlckard. Winning the championship class award was Richard Martin, Chambarsburg. Presenting the trophy was John Ocker, 111 with Judge, Roger Crider. said. “Winning doesn’t really mat ter as long as I go out and have fun." A sophomore at Francis Scott Key High School, Jeff belongs to the school’s FFA chapter. He also plays soccer and wrestles. He is vice president of the Union Bridge 4-H Club and a member of the Carroll County Dairy Club. Jeff works for Marlin Hoff of Coldsprings Farm in New Windsor. Jeff and his parents own 11 cows—most of which are his show animals. The Suttons keep their cattle at the Hoff farm. Jeff eventually plans to go to college to become a veterinarian. “I’d like to do that for a few years and then gradually work up to having my own farm," he said.
