    WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's dairy industry is the leading agricultural
industry in the Commonwealth, With 10,2 billion gallons of milk produced
annually, it ranks fourth in the nation in milk production; and
WHEREAS, in tribute to the hard work and dedication of the
Commonwealth's 11,500 commercial dairy farm families, the Dairy of
Distinction program was developed in 1987, A team of judges work to select
the most attractive dairy farms in Pennsylvania, rating them for neatness,
maintenance and roadside appearance. Five hundred and ninety-eight farms
have been honored since the inception of the program, including forty-three
farms receiving Dairy of Distinction awards for 1995,
THEREFORE', In recognition of the dedication and commitment of
our dairy farmers, I, Tom Ridge, Governor of the Commonwealth of
Pennsylvania, do hereby proclaim August 13 - 20, 1995, as DAIRY OF
DISTINCTION WEEK in Pennsylvania, I encourage all Pennsylvania
citizens to support the Commonwealth's dairy industry by enjoying our dairy
products, and to recognize the contributions made by Pennsylvania dairy
farmers to our economy and our quality of life.
