I have heard reports of fields being destroyed in as little as two weeks under conditions favorable to blight development While the weather is hot and dry, the potential for blight deve lopment is greatly reduced. But if the weather changes, you could be caught with unprotected fields and rain could keep you from applying fungicides. Whatever you choose to do, I strongly recommend that you maintain a regular and thorough scouting program. Weather conditions have been favorable for early blight develop ment on tomatoes. Dr. Alan Mac- Nab from Penn State is reporting that another similar leaf spot is also appearing Septoria leaf spot The two diseases are similar because both appear on older foliage. However, they can be distin guished by their appearance. Early blight spots are usually brownish with concentric dark rings while Septoria spots usually become light in color but may maintain the dark brown margin. lectibles, household. Septoria is prevalent during rainy weather because the spores are spread by splashing rain. Both diseases are controlled by fungi cides, but you may be surprised to see a high level of defoliation on early blight-tolerant varieties. This could be due to Septoria leaf spot since early blight tolerant varieties are not resistant to Septoria. Snap Beans The EPA has granted a Section 18 approval for the use of Ronilan SODF in Pennsylvania for the 199 S production season. This will be important to the processing indus try in areas where the Botry tis gray mold fungus has developed resis tance to other fungicides. However, there arc some very important conditions in this registration, including the stipula tion that only a maximum of 3,250 acres of snap beans may be treated in the stale during the 199 S grow ing season. Grower cooperation will be needed to insure that we do not exceed this limit. Dr. Mac Nab has taken responsibility for tracking applications, so please contact your county extension office, pes ticide representative, or processor Held representative to report appli cations of this material. General Vegetables Many vegetable diseases will begin to appear during July and others will show up in August from July infections. If your fields have a history of occurrence of a parti cular disease, now may be the time to apply the appropriate control measures. Fruit I’ve noticed a considerable amount of fire-blighted shoots in my travels about the county. These have mostly been on homeowner’s trees, but I have seen some in a commercial orchard. Control measures at this time are rather limited, but the follow ing actions on your part may pre vent greater damage from occurring: 1. Remove blighted shoots on small trees before the infection reaches the main trunk. Use a 10 percent bleach solution to disinfect pruning tools. Removal of shoots on larger trees may be difficult due to tree size or number of blighted shoots. Since only the youngest leaves are susceptible to infection, the spread of the disease will be greatly reduced in the future as ter minal growth has mostly ceased. Blighted shoots should be removed during next year’s dor mant pruning. 2. Do not apply streptomycin after bloom except when hail occurs. Then make the application within 24 hours or else it will not be effective. Do not apply strep tomycin within 60 days of harvest 3. Recent studies have shown that green apple aphids do not spread fire blight in the summer. The role of white apple leaf hop pers is uncertain, so in areas where blight is a problem they should be controlled. Additional information on fire blight and its control can be found in the “1994-1995 Pennsylvania Tree Fruit Production Guide”. teins, Grottoes, Va. Western Pa.
