Link workshop in Greensburg in
March and after several fpMo
gethers forged a deal to gradually
transfer the Hunt term.
Hunt's arthritis is so bad he had
been looking for yean (9 find
someone to lake over hit dairy
term. Under the agreement, Which
the men plan to renew annually,
Whitling provides most of the la
bor to run the 100-acre term in
Westmoreland County, while
Hunt offers expertise and housing.
Whitling will spend the next two yean {wild
ing up his dairy herd, and then if all goes well,
he will begin to buy machinery from Hunt. Once
the machinery is paid off, Whitling will have
first option to buy the farm.
An initiative of the Center for Rural Pennsyl
vania, Farm Link received over 400 inquiry
from people interested in starting to farm and
over 75 from people, who want to retire from
agriculture since its inception last summer. Hunt
and Whitling are the first to make a deal to trans
fer ownership.
Although the Center’s Director, Jeffrey
Soule, was unable to be present, he said. u We
are fortunate to have such people in rural Penn
sylvania to make this possible. Without trust and
the willingness to pass knowledge from one
generation to the next where would we be?”
Farm Link Coordinator, Marion Bowlan
hopes this is the beginning of a trend. She aM,
“I would like to sec more farmers in Pennsylva
nia’s future, not less. Hunt and Whitling’s com
mitment to work together toward that goal is a
good start”
Farm Credit the Pennsylvania Association
for Sustainable Agriculture, the Rodale Insti
tute, and the Center for Rural Pennsylvania,
some of the original sponsors of the Farm i-inir
program, donated the money to purchase the
calf for Whitling.
