Chapter of the Penn State Alumni
Association has announced that it
has awarded Pennsylvania State
University scholarships to four
Lancaster County high school
seniors.
The 1995 scholarship recipients
were Phillip Bower, Manheim
High School; Andrew Brown,
Penn Manor High School; Kerry
Frey, Cocalico High School; and
Anastasia Mitchell, Garden Spot
High School.

Emu Growout Facility
BLOOMSBURG (Columbia
Co.) Preliminary plans are
under way here at Longview Emu
Farm, to begin the construction of
a 250-bird unit growout facility.
Longview Emu Farm, owned
and operated by David and Joanne
Long, has been breeding emu for
more than two years, and is now in
a position for a transition to the
commercial market.
In addition to Longview pro
duced emu, they will begin taking
contracts from private emu farms
to grow out chicks to commercial
age. Approximately 95 acres will
be set aside for use as growout
areas, with initial set up utilizing
about 25 acres. Growout contracts
will be on a first-come, first-served

Canada, France. U.K., Spain and
other parts of the world. The
American Emu Association has
more than 6,000 members in 48
states involved in the emu indus
try. By-products of the emu
include a red meat similar to beef,
oil tendered from fat being used in
cosmetic products with research
under way for medicinal applica
tions, hide used for leather, and
egg shells and feathers used for
crafts and jewelry items.
