The award winners, announced last November in Kansas City, Mo., during the 67th National FFA Convention, will be leaving the Washington, D.C., area on June 18. Highlights of the tour include stops in Germany, Bel gium and Luxembourg. During the seminar, the stu dents will observe typical agricul tural practices in Eastern and Western Europe. As a part of their European cultural experience, the FFA members will: 'Visit agricul tural cooperatives (collective farms) in Germany. 'Explore the city of Berlin. 'Receive a briefing on German agriculture by a mem ber of the Ministry of Food, Agri culture and Forestry. 'Take a cruise on the Rhine River. 'Stay with a host family at Grossenhain, Germany (formerly East Ger many). 'Receive a briefing from officials of the European Commis sion on GATT in Brussels. 'Visit a breeder of the well known double muscled “Belgium White-Blue” cattle. 'Visit the American cemet ery in Luxembourg where General Patton is buried. 'Visit the Paffen dorf Castle to observe the restora tions of farm land following open pit mining. To give them a more accurate taste of European life, the students will stay with host families for part of their trip. They will also Remove Refrigerator Odors To remove odor from your refrigerator or freezer, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for care or use general cleaning pro cedures as follows: Wash the inside of the cabinet with detergent and water. Rinse with a clean cloth and clear water, and wipe dry. The plastic gasket which seals the door is likely to hold odors. Wash it thoroughly, rinse and dry carefully. If odor remains, wash with a solution of 1 teaspoon baking soda for each quart of warm water. In addition to the old standby of baking soda, activated charcoal will soak up persistent odors. Spread about 3 ounces of the fine powdered charcoal on a sheet of aluminum foil or in a shallow pan. Place on refrigerator or freezer Child Care Providers WILLIAMSPORT (Lycoming Co.) —A satellite workshop, “Kids in the Outdoors” will be held on June 6, at the Montours ville High School. Registration will start at 6:45 p.m., and the satellite broadcast is from 7:00 to 8:15 p.m. Child care providers will receive new ideas on outdoor play activities, packing food for picn ics, field trips, playground safety, children’s songs and reading to children. The seminar, in addition to the cash awards and plaques pre sented last November, is made possible by business and industry contributions to the National FFA Foundation, Inc. “American agriculture has a significant stake in the global marketplace,” said Dr. Larry Case, national FFA adviser. “There is no substitute for first hand experience in learning to work with other cultures, and the investment we make today in these top young leaders will help secure our future in international trade.” According to Case, the travel seminar follows closely the goals of the Strategic Plan for Agricul tural Education. “This activity is one way the National FFA Orga nization fulfills some goals of the strategic plan. A global perspec tive is a vital ingredient in educa tion today. This trip will illustrate the similarities and differences in agriculture worldwide and help these students develop creativity in entrepreneurship.” Accompanying the students on this seminar will be National FFA staff members Robert Seefeldt, teacher services specialist and Rod Duckworth, teacher services specialist, as well as Scott Stump, student services specialist and Edward Stephens, an agriculture teacher from Carthage, Mo. Ste phens also serves as a member of the National FFA Board of Directors. shelf. Foods can remain in the refrigerator with the charcoal. After 6 to 8 hours, put the pan of charcoal in a moderate 350 degree oven for 20 minutes. This will reactivate the charcoal so it can be re-used many times. Put the charcoal back in the refrigerator. Repeat the process until the odor disappears. Activated charcoal can be pur chased at aquarium supply stores, agricultural supply stores, or at a pharmacy; prices vary greatly according to source with the aquarium supply store generally being the least expensive. Chlorophyll cat litter also absorbs odors. Put the cat litter in about a 'A inch layer in a shallow pan and place in the refrigerator or freezer. The training is free, but registration is required. To regis ter, call the Lycoming County Extension office at (717) 327-2350 before June 2. The workshop meets the training requirements as specified by the Pennsylvania Department of Publ ic Welfare. All individuals involved in child-care are encouraged to attend this training. You do not have to be a licensed provider to participate.
