York County Holds Ag Skills Day Mote than 200 York County Agriculture Education students re cently participated in the Annual York County Ag Skills Assess ment Day activities held at Dover Area High School. The students represented Dov er, Eastern, Kennard-Dale, North ern, and Red Lion and selected from these seven different events: agronomy, ag mechanics, ag sales, dairy foods, forestry, land, or wildlife. The winner of the agronomy contest was Lester Baney, a stu dent at Dover Area High School. Lester correctly identified weed, crop, and insect samples and made accurate agronomic recommenda tions from the Penn State Agro nomy Guide. Gale Leiphart from Eastern York and Angela Gable from Dover Area placed second and third, respectively. The ag mechanics contest was conducted in two sessions with the morning session testing student skills in engines, electric motors, building construction, and cost and tool sharpening and fitting. The afternoon session tested elec tricity, plumbing, and machine operation. Curt Ross of Dover High School received first place in the morning session and Nathan Her sey of Kennard-Dale placed first in the second session. The 1995 YCASA day winner in ag sales was Kristi Ryder of Dover High School. Kristi excel led in product knowledge, sales techniques, and product presenta tion. Following her in the awards ranking were Drew Bankert, Red Lion, and Regina Shelton, Red Lion. At Pinchot Park, Carrie May of Northern correctly identified spe cies of trees in the forestry contest. Joining Carrie horn Northern with second and third place finishes were Share Lehman and Shane Albert. Pinchot Park was also the site for the wildlife contest, where stu dents were required to identify' birds and mammals and bird calls. Additionally, students needed to identify wildlife foods, wildlife .signs, animal tracks, and evaluate wildlife habitat sites. With the as sistance of the Pennsylvania Game Commission, results were first place, Lucas Wolf from East ern York; second place, Jed Smy ser from Dover, and third place, Jesse Greenwood from Eastern York. Places second through fifth were Jed Smyser, Dover; Jeff Metzler, Northern; Calc Leiphart, Eastern; and Marc Laflamme, Dover. 4-H Trail Riding Club Formed On Tuesday, May 2, a 4-H Horseback Trail Riding Club was organized by Penn State Coopera tive Extension in Dauphin Coun ty. This group will focus on teach ing youth a variety of life skills as well as horse skills. Parents are encouraged to be involved. The next meeting will be Satur- day, June 17, at the Green lands. Any youth ages 8-18 with an inter est in trail riding should bring a parent and their horse and join us. Parents are welcome to ride along. If you can’t bring a horse and are interested, come aqyway.
