C2-lancaster Fanning, Saturday, April 29, 1995 Record Cattle Numbers, Youth Involvement At World Beef Expo MADISON, Wis. More cattle and more youth involvement contributed to the success of World Beef Expo *95 here recently. During the three-day event, 1,417 cattle from 15 different breed shows paraded through the show ring in the open show and junior show. This represent ed a 27 percent increase over the number of cat tle exhibited at the 1994 World Beef Expo. The four largest shows included the Polled Hereford, Angus, Simmental and Belgian Blue breeds. Twenty-three states and two Canadian provinces (Ontario and Saskatchewan) were represented this year in the cattle exhibition also a jump from last year of only IS states. Two new breed shows were added to this year’s Ex po, which included the Texas Longhorns and Scottish Highlands. Rob Duis of Champaign, Illinois took top honors in the junior division of the “Spirit” Youth Sweepstakes during World Beef Expo. Rounding out the top three in the junior division were Shane Richey of Plymouth, Indiana, sec ond place; and Jennifer Abrahamson of Hous ton, Minnesota, third place. The senior division champ was Jordan Redalen of Fillmore, Minne sota. Second place went to Wess Richey of Ply mouth, Indiana, and Jerad Zimmerman of Lan caster, Wisconsin, won third place honors. Youths who participated in the “Spirit” Youth Sweepstakes competed for expanded premiums. All youth activities were open to any boy or girl who was nine to 19 years of age as of January 1, 1995. Categories for competition in the “Spirit” Youth Sweepstakes included seven contests: showmanship, practical herdsmanship, beef evaluation, public speaking, individual quiz, heifer show, and steer show. More than 500 animals were entered in the junior show with 344 youths participating, a slight increase over 1994. The grand champion market heifer was shown by Jesse Singerhouse of Menomonie, Wis. The reserve champion market heifer was shown by Jason Capatske of Beldenville, Wis. The champion commercial breeding heifer was exhibited by Tabitha Keene of Potosi, Wis. and the reserve champion com mercial breeding heifer was shown by Jennifer Abrahamson of Houston, Minn. The overall steer champion was shown by Rusty Day of Meadow, Texas and Steve Runkel of Burlington, Wis. showed the reserve cham pion overall steer. A total of $420,590 was generated in sales from the six breed sales during World Beef Ex po ’95. Two new sales were added this year for the Limousin and Salas breeds. The top-selling animal among all six sales was an Angus by the name of Woodhill Evergreen 120-193 which sold for $12,250. She was consigned by Wood hill Angus of Viroqua, Wis. In March, the World Beef Expo board of directors voted to change the dates few 1996 World Beef Expo to October 10-12, on the heels of World Dairy Expo (October 2-6,1996). The change to a fall schedule will eliminate conflicts with planting and calving season and will en hance the sale of bred heifers. The addition of club calf and finished steer shows and sales is also expected. The date change will also help take advantage of the large international crowd that attends World Dairy Expo, of which many are involved in both beef and dairy production in their native country. 1995 World Beef Expo Breed Champion Summary ANGUS: Grand Champion Mala - Gary Dameron, Lexing ton, Illinois: Grand Champion Famala - Wagner Angus, Wol cott, Indiana.
