LANCASTER (Lancaster Co.)
There’s truly a “doctor” in the
house for vegetable and fruit grow
ers in Lancaster County, now that a
horticultural agent has been hired.
Dr. Timothy Elkner, who holds
a doctorate in horticulture from
Virginia Tech, has succeeded H.
Bruce Hellerick, former agent, as
the new Lancaster County horti
cultuial agent, it was announced
this week.
Elkner, who begins with the
Penn State Lancaster County
Cooperative Extension Service on
June 5, obtained his degrees in
plant science, including a bache
lor’s from Cook College at Rut
ger’s, a master’s from Clemson,
and a doctorate from Virginia
Tech. Studies include the photo
synthesis of peaches while com
pleting the master’s degree work
and the photosynthesis of apples
was the focus of his doctoral
dissertation.
For three years, Elkner served as
a plant physiologist with Texas
Tech University in Lubbock,
working on studies of grape cold
hardiness for the wine industry in
the state.
A native of Mays Landing, New
Jersey, Elkner told Lancaster
Farming that he was looking for
ward to working with Lancaster
County farmers on the emerging
fruit industry and to help develop

An odorless, colorless,
invisible-and costly
forage thief!
You can't see it--and you can't stop it. Storage losses in forage can
steal your valuable crop-how much is lost depends upon how you
store your feed;
• Tower Silos have Up to 8% loss*
• Bunkers have Up to 45% loss**
If the average difference in feed lost between tower silos and
bunkers is 30%, then storage of 1000 tons will mean 300 tons
MORE lost in a bunker. If silage is valued at $3O per ton, the
additional losses from bunker storage would be $9OOO a year.
For information on losses for all types of crop storage methods,
contact the Crop Storage Institute for your free copy of" Methods
of Crop Storage" and "Know the Facts."
