There’s truly a “doctor” in the house for vegetable and fruit grow ers in Lancaster County, now that a horticultural agent has been hired. Dr. Timothy Elkner, who holds a doctorate in horticulture from Virginia Tech, has succeeded H. Bruce Hellerick, former agent, as the new Lancaster County horti cultuial agent, it was announced this week. Elkner, who begins with the Penn State Lancaster County Cooperative Extension Service on June 5, obtained his degrees in plant science, including a bache lor’s from Cook College at Rut ger’s, a master’s from Clemson, and a doctorate from Virginia Tech. Studies include the photo synthesis of peaches while com pleting the master’s degree work and the photosynthesis of apples was the focus of his doctoral dissertation. For three years, Elkner served as a plant physiologist with Texas Tech University in Lubbock, working on studies of grape cold hardiness for the wine industry in the state.
