My Ladys Manor Rules At Md. Holstein Show
LOIS SZYMANSKI
Maryland Correspondent
TIMONIUM, Md.—The Mary
land State Spring Holstein Show
was held at the Cow Palace here at
the Maryland State Fairgrounds
last Saturday. Judge Robert Fitz
simmons of Vermont evaluated
238 head of cattle, including ISS
junior entries.
In the final analysis, it was the
Smith family of My Ladys Manor
Farm that reigned supreme at the
show, winning grand champion in
the junior show as well as the open
show. For the Smith family, the
success of the day was com
pounded when their grand champ
ion also won best Maryland bred
and owned, and My Ladys Manor
Farm was awarded premier breed
er and exhibitor of show.
The grand champion in the open
division was Ladys Manor Astro
Star, an aged cow sired by Bridon
Astro Jet-ET and out of Ladys-
Manor Charmstar Chance. She
was exhibited by My Ladys Manor
Farm.
“Ladys Manor Charmstar
Chance was an 86 point cow with
three excellent dams,” said Harold
Smith 111.
Ladys Manor Astro Star has had
no heifer calves, but has delivered
four bull calves for the farm. She is
due back again Sept. 5. According
to Smith, “She has projected at five

years of age to have 26,000 pound
s, with 1,100 fat and 850 pounds
protein.”
Reserve grand champion in the
open show went to Marlin Hoffs
MD-Oakview Mark Kix, a 5-year
old cow sired by Walkway Chief
Mark and out of MD-Oakview
Enhancer Kate-ET. Hoff’s 5-year
old cow was also the total perfor
mance winner with 29,800 pounds.
In the junior show, the award of
grand champion was earned by
exhibitor Harold Smith and My
Ladys Manor Farm with Ladys-
Manor Vanna Dee-ET, a 5-year
old cow sired by Bridon Astro Jet-
ET and out of Ladys Manor Vanna
Charmstar. “She has won five
other grand champions,” said the
young Harold Smith of die champ
ion cow.
“She has spoiled him!” the elder
Harold Smith joked of his son’s
grand champion cow. She has also
produced three calves for the farm,
but none have been shown yet
Reserve grand champion went
to exhibitor Mark lager and his
5-year-old cow. Unicorn
Blackstar-Hannah-ET. In the
junior show, best bred and owned
went to Chip Savage and his
2-year-old cow. Savage-Leigh
Tigercat Linda.
“It was a tremendous, high
quality show,” said Judge Fitzsim
mons, “as you would expect from
Maryland. There's always a lot of
quality cows in Maryland. It was a
real tough show to do because
there were so many good cows in
each class!”
The 2Sth anniversary of this
spring show did not go by without
notice. The special celebration in
order included free cheese (pro
vided by Mid-America), free milk
(provided by Md-Va Milk Co-op),
crackers, and a giant anniversary
cake. Visitors to the show were
invited to join in the celebration
and the snacks.
A huge display board created by
Dr. Lee Majesky exhibited pic
tures of the champion cow for each
of the spring shows ova* the last 25
years, and the front of the show
catalogue listed show statistics for
each annual show from 1971 to
1994. This information included
the location, the judge, grand and
reserve champions, junior and
reserve champions (and their own
ers), premier breeder, and
exhibitor.
