Holstein Show LOIS SZYMANSKI Maryland Correspondent TIMONIUM, Md.—The Mary land State Spring Holstein Show was held at the Cow Palace here at the Maryland State Fairgrounds last Saturday. Judge Robert Fitz simmons of Vermont evaluated 238 head of cattle, including ISS junior entries. In the final analysis, it was the Smith family of My Ladys Manor Farm that reigned supreme at the show, winning grand champion in the junior show as well as the open show. For the Smith family, the success of the day was com pounded when their grand champ ion also won best Maryland bred and owned, and My Ladys Manor Farm was awarded premier breed er and exhibitor of show. The grand champion in the open division was Ladys Manor Astro Star, an aged cow sired by Bridon Astro Jet-ET and out of Ladys- Manor Charmstar Chance. She was exhibited by My Ladys Manor Farm. “Ladys Manor Charmstar Chance was an 86 point cow with three excellent dams,” said Harold Smith 111. Ladys Manor Astro Star has had no heifer calves, but has delivered four bull calves for the farm. She is due back again Sept. 5. Hoff’s 5-year old cow was also the total perfor mance winner with 29,800 pounds. In the junior show, the award of grand champion was earned by exhibitor Harold Smith and My Ladys Manor Farm with Ladys- Manor Vanna Dee-ET, a 5-year old cow sired by Bridon Astro Jet- ET and out of Ladys Manor Vanna Charmstar. “She has won five other grand champions,” said the young Harold Smith of die champ ion cow. “She has spoiled him!” the elder Harold Smith joked of his son’s grand champion cow. She has also produced three calves for the farm, but none have been shown yet Reserve grand champion went to exhibitor Mark lager and his 5-year-old cow. Unicorn Blackstar-Hannah-ET. In the junior show, best bred and owned went to Chip Savage and his 2-year-old cow. Savage-Leigh Tigercat Linda. “It was a tremendous, high quality show,” said Judge Fitzsim mons, “as you would expect from Maryland. There's always a lot of quality cows in Maryland. It was a real tough show to do because there were so many good cows in each class!” The 2Sth anniversary of this spring show did not go by without notice. The special celebration in order included free cheese (pro vided by Mid-America), free milk (provided by Md-Va Milk Co-op), crackers, and a giant anniversary cake. Visitors to the show were invited to join in the celebration and the snacks. A huge display board created by Dr. Lee Majesky exhibited pic tures of the champion cow for each of the spring shows ova* the last 25 years, and the front of the show catalogue listed show statistics for each annual show from 1971 to 1994. This information included the location, the judge, grand and reserve champions, junior and reserve champions (and their own ers), premier breeder, and exhibitor.
