Somerset Holstein Club Names Directors, Honors Youth GAY BROWNLEE Somerset Co. Correspondent ROCKWOOD (Somerset Co.) About 150 people attended the Somerset County Holstein Club annual banquet and business meeting held recently at the Rockwood Fire Hall. The purpose of the annual meet ing was to elect officers, recognize members’ outstanding achieve ments and hear reports on the orga nization and industry. In elections, Willard Maust, of Meyersdale, Scott Foreman, of Rockwood, and Ben Miller, of Boswell, were elected to three year terms on the county club’s board of directors. Maust was re elected. Also, in award-winner recogni tions, plaques were distributed to junior members. All production awards were based on milk and milk component production dur ing a 305-day lactation and twice per-day milking. The top producer of milk and protein was BJ-Line Glow Veroni ca, owned by Matthew Hunsber gcr. Veronica produced 24,861 pounds of milk, with 859 pounds of butterfat and 794 pounds of pro tein. Her butterfat production was second in the county among regis tered Holsteins entered. The top butterfat producer was BJ-Line SW Ragheeb, owned by Nicholas Hunsberger. Ragheeb made 22,219 pounds milk, 919 pounds butterfat, and 786 pounds protein. She was second for milk and protein. Two Hillegass youth, of Berlin, received awards for owning the top producing 3-year-old, 4-year-old, 5-year-old, and 6-year-old cows. Among the 3-ycar-olds, the top producer was Antrim-Spring Inspiration Reina-ET, owned by Justin Hillegass. Reina made 26.323 pounds of milk, 1,040 pounds of fat, and 820 pounds protein. Desirae Hillegass not only had the top producing 4-year-old, but also the top S-year-old. Her top producing 4-year-old for milk and components was Miss Hill-A-Way Ryan Kacy. Kacy made 28,162 pounds of milk, 840 pounds of butterfat, and 803 pounds of protein. Desirae’s top producing 5-year old was Hill-A-Way Mark Pansy, with production of 28,396 pounds of milk, 1,006 pounds of butterfat and BSS pounds of protein. William Mosholder, of Rock wood. received awards for the pro duction from two of his cows. In second place among the 3-year-old cows for milk and milk component production was Double-Ott Mos sys Dee Dee, with 22,496 pounds of milk, with 847 pounds butterfat, and 780 pounds of protein. The high producing 6-year-old for milk components was Moshol der’s Fra-Jan Valiant Miracle, with production of 28,629 pounds of milk, with 1,077 pounds of but terfat, and 863 pounds of protein. Also in connection with that convention, Brian Deal reported that, for the third straight year, Somerset County was honored for having the most members attend the convention. There were other highlights dur ing the banquet The county Junior Holstein Club held an auction of dairy items such as food, a calf, semen and service, milicing ser vices, clipping services, and spe cialty items to raise money so club members can attend the national Holstein convention, scheduled for June. According to Connie Welch, auction committee member, the $567 raised during the banquet exceeded the goal members set She said the support is greatly appreciated, as some of the planned activities come with great expense, such as a boat cruise on the popular Gateway Clipper.
