Adams County 4-H The Adams County 4-H Potato Judging team placed first at the annual state 4-H Potato Judging competition held at the 1995 Farm Show. Adams County had three B Division teams which placed sec ond, third, and fifth. The third place B team members were Helena Yelovich, Orrtanna; Jason Keller, Gettys burg; Laura Burdette, Gettysburg; and Brett Radi, Hanover. The fifth place B team members were Keith Livelsberger, Gettysburg; Ann Bodenberg, Gettysburg; Zachary Eckert, Gettysburg; and Jessi Leister, Gettysburg. The individual placings for combined divisions are as follows: Karen Shipley was first place indi vidual with 454.5, Denise Green was second place individual with 451, and Kriste Rahe was tied for ninth place individual with 429.5. The teams have been practicing for the contest for the last 12 weeks. The contest consists of 1 ) deciding if each of 100 potatoes is either in or out of grade - a time and accuracy relationship; 2) iden tifying 20 potato defects on 40 potatoes; and 3) placing 2 classes of 4 plates of potatoes. The 4-H judging process is designed to help youth develop decision-mak ing skills. Assistant coaches were Abe Bucher and Mark Linebaugh. T.R.O.T. A new 4-H horse and pony club started in the area recently. The club is for girls and boys 8 to 19 years old who like horses. You don’t have to own a horse to join this club. The club has decided on a fund raising project and has elected officers. The officers are presi dent, Laura Henssler; vice presi dent, Tiffany Steely; secretary, Kathleen Shober; treasurer, Kate Gehman; new reporter, Cody Wenger; and activities leader, Jared Brackbill. During the last meeting, the members made Christmas wreaths from bailer twine. On Nov. 19 they attended the finals rodeo in Harrisburg. The club name is T.R.O.T. (Teen Riders of Today). Meetings are held every other Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at St. Johns Center Lutheran Church located on Rt. 625 south of Bow mansville. New members are welcome. York County 4-H The York County 4-H Club members welcomed in 1995 with their annual New Years Eve’s Eve party on Friday, Dec. 30, at the 4-H Center in Bair. Lancaster Farming, Saturday, January 21, 1995-B7 More than 135 youth and adults enjoyed the festivities that were sponsored by the 4-H County Council. The day started at 3 p.m. with a training session for officers in the various clubs. Members got a chance to learn about how to be president, vice president, secre tary, treasurer, historian, news reporter, or social chairperson for their club. After the workshops, the real fun began. Forty-four pizzas were brought to the center and the mem bers had no trouble devouring them. After the pizza was gone, mem bers decorated the hall for a New Year’s Eve’s Eve party. The even ing ended with a dance with enter tainment provided by DJ by Joy. Members of the 4-H Country Line Dance Club dazzled the audi ence with their fancy footwork. Instructor Cathy Brown taught line dances to all. State Farm Show again this year. Returning for a second year, the York County Super Sonic Spuds Potato Judging Team com peted with other teams from across the state. Team members graded 100 potatoes, identified defects and diseases, and placed a class of potatoes, all to USDA standards. Team members include Kristy Brown, York; Missy Stough, Glen Rock; Jay Rishel, Seven Valleys; Kristina McElwain, Stewart stown; and Lucas and Rijelle Kraft, Manchester. York County 4-H Rabbit and Small Animal Club members par ticipated in the rabbit show on Sat urday, Jan. 7, at the Pennsylvania State Farm Show. Members show ing rabbits included Lillian Eddinger, New Freedom, showing Rhinelanders, American Chin chillas, and a Flemish Giant. Member Rijelle Kraft, Manches ter, showing Netherland Dwarfs and Mini-rexes. President of the Club, Lucas Kraft, Manchester, showed his Dutch and Harlequin breeds as well as New Zealand Whites in the meat classes. Missy Stough, Glen Rock, showed mini-lops and has entered a meat pen in the youth competition. Karen Keyser, York, showed her Californians, Holland Lops, and has also entered a meat pen.
