Hard Work, Calf Selection Create Supreme Heifer Champion
ANDY ANDREWS
Lancaster Fanning Staff
HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.)
Hard work and selecting calves
that have the best chance of suc
cess in the show ring were the
ingredients in providing a supreme
champion heifer for Abe and
Grace Flory, Mountain Valley
Angus, Lititz, on Monday after
noon at the Farm Show beef
competition.
Grace Flory said that the dam of
this year's suncpme champion
heifer produced me grand champ
ion buU in the Angus breed for the
Flory’s at last year’s Farm Show.
Flory said a “lot of hard work” and
“watching the calves, weaning
them, and halter-breaking” went
into obtaining a championship, she
said moments after holding the
banner for supreme champion.
Angus champion heifer was awarded to Mountain Valley
Angus, Litltz, with Abe Flory at the halter. From left, Tom

Judges Robert McGuire.
Auburn, Ala., Simmental judge
and A. L. Eller, Jr., Blacksburg,
Va., Angus judge, chose the April
junior yearling heifer, Mt. Valley
Julie Heather (S; WK Future, D:
Julies Jewel), as supreme heifer.
When judging the Angus class,
Eller picked the heifer because of
its “excellent representation of the
breed.”
Grace Flory said that a 4-H’er,
Freddy Weaver, helped them
select the animal while a calf to
show in championship events.
The judges chose the early
2-year-old Simmental bull exhi
