Chester County Dairy Day
Start the new year off right with
a top line dairy meeting at East
Brandywine Fire Hall, Guthries
ville, on Wednesday, Jan. 4, from
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dairy Day in
Chester County features excellent
speakers on timely topics along
with a good dinner for $5 and
exhibits by agri-businesses.
In the morning. Dr. Brian
Perkins, an independent dairy
nutrition and management consul
tant from New England, will dis
cuss using commodities in a feed
ing program.
He will give a second talk after
dinner on managing the dairy farm
for maximum profit. Dr. Perkins is
a practical consultant and a very
good communicator.
Dr. “Jud” Heinrichs, Penn State
dairy nutritionist, will also have
two segments on the program
dry cow management, the key to
the next lactation, and keeping
yearling heifers healthy and grow
ing. Dr. Robert Graves, Penn State
agricultural engineer, will focus
on cow comfort in Pennsylvania
stall barns.

Chemsweep
Farmers in Chester County
have a one-time opportunity to
dispose of outdated, cancelled,
damaged, or unneeded pesticides
in 1995.
The Pennsylvania Department
of Agriculture (PDA) has targeted
Chester County for the Chem
sweep program this coming year,
but, before Dec. 31, 1994, farmers
must fill out an inventory sheet
that was mailed in October. '
The best part of this program is
that it is FREE,-funded by registra
tion fees collected from chemical
companies.
The purpose of the program is
to legally and safely remove cer
tain pesticides from farms before
they cause environmental prob
lems. A PDA official will visit
your farm to verify your submitted
inventory list and to sample any
unknown products.

Thcrcwiil be no effort made to
censor your storage system. Their
only aim is to remove the pesti
cides front your farm no matter
what condition they are in. The
pesticides wilt be picked up direct
ly from your farm at a later date.
Do not mix or transport pesti
cides. This only complicates the
procedure.
