For most Americans, the term “wetlands” encompasses everything from the Everglades to that dip in your front lawn that fills up every time it rains. Every one has an idea what the term means, but most are mystified beyond that. Dr. Robert Brooks, associate professor of wildlife ecology in Penn State’s College of Agricul tural Sciences, has co-authored a 68-page book called “Wetlands and Wildlife” that not only pro vides simple explanations of what wetlands are, but also explains how to conserve, improve and even build your own wetlands if you’re so inclined. Brooks and his co-authors, Daniel Devlin, a wildlife biologist with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, have produced a well-illustrated, highly readable primer that tells you everything you might want to know about wetlands... and then some. In Pennsylvania, there are some 500,000 acres of wetlands, covering 2 percent of the state’s surface area. The book provides a Zip: Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 19, 1994-815 brisk overview of how wetlands in the state have been historically used, including informative statis tics on how many acres of wet lands have been destroyed in the past 200 years. The text also outlines federal and Pennsylvania state laws gov erning wetlands and details efforts by private groups concerned with wetlands preservation. Phone numbers for state and federal agencies also are provided. The bulk of “Wetlands and Wildlife” offers detailed, but sim ply stated prescriptions on how to manage wetlands for wildlife by concentrating on “protecting what you have.” Descriptions on how to enhance wildlife from beavers (described in the book as “the original wetlands managers”) to crayfish are included, as are detailed drawings on how to build a nest box for ducks, a mallard nest and a Canada goose nest. Illustrations by Ned Smith com plement the text. “Wetlands and Wildlife” is available for $4 from the Publica tions Distribution Center, The Pennsylvania State University, 112 Agricultural Administration Building, University Park, PA 16802.
