Jill elites of Berlin, and Brian Shaffer, also of Berlin, were named the Penn West Farm Credit Outstanding 4-H Girl and Boy at the annual Somerset County 4-H Recognition Dinner, attended by some 325 persons. Clites, a freshman at Mount Aloysius College, belongs to the Valley 4-H and also the Milk squirts. She’s a former Keystone winner in Fashion Revue and Home Management, and a dele gate on the Utah Exchange trip. Tim and Sue Clites of Berlin are the 19-year-old’s parents. Shaffer, 18, the son of Lee and Jean Shaffer, Berlin, attends the Shanksville-Stoneycreek High School and belongs to the Broth erton Belles and Beaus and Milk drops 4-H clubs. He, in December, will repre sent Somerset County at the National 4-H Congress, held this year in Orlando, Florida. Dairy, engineering and health are Shaffer’s main 4-H areas and he’s attended various ag-engineer ing events held in Richmond, Vir ginia. He was also a delegate on the Utah Exchange trip. Above $5,000 in scholarships and awards were presented to winners Travis Anderson, Marilee Appel, Jason Baughman, Valerie Castro, Bobbi Darr, Kevin Landis, Nicole McElligott, Jennifer Ran dall, Jacglen Rhoads, Melissa Vought, Heather Welch, Christy Wysocki, and Jill Clites. Anderson, the son of Tom and Betty Anderson received a schol arship from First Philson Bank. He attends Slippery Rock Univer sity. Appel, the daughter of Roy and Mary Jane Appel, attends the Gar rett Community College. Her scholarships were from the 4-H Development Fund and Bob Antram Retirement Fund. Somerset Selects Baughman, who attends Penn State, Altoona campus, is the son of Melvin and Bonnie Baughman. His scholarships were from Hem minger Homes and Highland Tank and Mfg. Company. Castro, the daughter of Donald and Vernice Castro, also attends Penn State, Altoona. Her scholar ships were from BJ. Mauer and the Marteenys. Clites received scholarships from the Somerset County Lady Shepherds and Penn West Farm Credit. Darr attends Penn State and is the daughter of Barry and Lynn Darr. She received scholarships from the 4-H Development Fund and Bob Antram Retirement Fund. Kevin Landis, son of Don and Polly Landis, attends the Alle gany Community College. He received the Leroy Glessner Memorial Fund Scholarship. McElligott, daughter of Carol Brown and William McElligott attends Penn State, Altoona. Her scholarships were from Black’s Specialty Service, 4-H Develop ment Fund and Bob Antram Retirement Fund. Randall, daughter of Charles and Kathryn Randall attends Millersville University. Scholar ships were from the Keystone Lime Co., Inc. and the Somerset County Home Builders and Sup pliers Association. Rhoads, daughter of Dennis and Yvonne Rhoads, attends the Indiana University of Pennsylva nia. Her scholarship was from the Pittsburgh National Bank. Vought, the daughter of Tim and Shirley Fought, received a scholarship from the Somerset County Beef Producers. She attends Penn State. Welch, daughter Dr. David and Connie Welch, attends the University of Pittsburgh at John stown. Her scholarship was the Betsy Will Custer 4-H Outstand ing Dairy Member Award. Wysocki, daughter of Jim and Marcia Wysocki attends Penn State. Her scholarships were from the Brotherton Belles and Beaus 4-H club and “Somerset Trust Company. Award of the Clover recogni tion was made by the Cooperative Extension staff. Sapphire Clover, for 35 years of leadership went to Lowell Friedline, Jenner Twp. Ruby Clover, for 30 years of leadership, went to Richard Ely, also Jenner Twp. Emerald Clover, for 25 years, went to William Blough, Jenner Twp. Diamond Clover, 20 years, went to Lois Duppstadt and Cindy Walker, both, Brotherton Belles and Beaus. Gold Clover for 10 years went to Peggy Black, Karen Kretch man, Marie Waltermire, Linnie Will, and David Wise. Silver Clover, for five years, went to Gary Barton, Doug Black, Vernice Castro, Susie Clites, Jayne Deal, John Ferko, Cheryl Hay, Debra Hay, Connie Hillegas, Annette Knotts, Teresa Landis, Agnes Lee, Andrew Meier, Susan Meier, Edward Phillipp, Richard Sines and Mar cia Wysocki. Natalie Welch, president of the County 4-H Council, with Peggy Black, president of the Somerset County 4-H Develop ment Fund, lead the evening’s ceremonies. Entertainment was by the Largent Brothers, Ken and Keith, local performers who have recorded a country music album and are rising to professional notoriety.
