Y.—The New York State Grange is seeking national ratification of its recent decision to oppose labeling of mink produced by cows treated with the controversial bovine growth hormone BST. Scheduled for consideration at the National Grange session in Peoria, 111. later this month, the resolution was one of dozens approved during the state Grange’s just-concluded annual session and it is among 25 that New Yorkers are forwarding for consideration at the National Session. The Grange’s position relies on a federal Food and Drug Adminis tration determination that con sumers have nothing to fear from the use of bovine somatotropin. The organization is also con cerned that the labeling of prod ucts produced by animals treated with BST—a naturally occurring hormone produced by the cow’s pituitary gland—could unneces sarily frighten consumers.
