When they go through experiences like this, after they graduate they’re going to be more productive citizens,” observed agri culture teacher Charles Franklin, referring to FFA’s student men toring program. Partners in Active Learning Support (PALS) matches high school agriculture students (men tors) with elementary youngsters (mentees) living in at-risk envi ronments. PALS is sponsored by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation as a special project of the National FFA Foundation, Inc. At this year’s National FFA Convention, November 10-12, in Kansas City, Mo., a PALS men toring conference will be held to expand participation in this pro gram. One of the objectives of PALS is to develop improved self-esteem and self-concept in students as a result of the relation ships between FFA members and elementary youth and in turn develop happier and more produc tive citizens in our society. The PALS mentoring program began in 1991 and is active in 150 [lf 'AY AGV f Gfi YE ■9O (1 1/4 OZ. Stop by your nearest Agway store or representative. Mentors and mentees work together in one-to one relationships focused on learning and developing outdoor projects in the world of agricul ture. There are seven members of each PALS team including two each of teachers, administrators, and counselors along with one community member. An impor tant component of the PALS pro gram is community involvement. The FFA provides the framework with which to develop PALS and the community takes charge of tailoring the program to the needs of the children in that specific area. In a 1994 study conducted by the University of Texas at San Antonio, 76 percent of the teach ers who participated in the PALS program observed that mentors had a better understanding of human development, younger chil dren, and themselves. PALS is a program that supports and guides youngsters on a path to healthy and productive lives. For those FFA chapters interested in starting a PALS program, the PALS hot line is 1 (800) PALS-FFA.
