Ag Scholar Alumna Combine Love Of Plants And People Newark, Del. “After a week end visiting the college, I knew I wanted to study here,” says Amy Miller Rogers, a graduate of the college of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Delaware. Rogers applied for an agricultural sciences scholarship after hearing a professor from the college speak at her high school. The Agricultural Sciences Scholarship program opens opportunities for many careers related to agriculture. Since its inception in 1986, 84 scholar ships have been awarded and 29 recipients have graduated. The full impact of the program will grow with each graduating class. Rogers, who graduated in Jan uary 1993 with a double major in plant science and agricultural education, says, “My experience at the agricultural college was great. I enjoyed the close working relationship between professors and students.” As a plant science horticulture major, Rogers served two sum mer internships. At the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens she worked maintaining the gardens and developing a garden irriga tion system. While there, she gave educational tours of the vegetable garden used in Public Broadcasting System’s popular program “The Victory Garden.” She also led tours of herb gardens and conducted herb topiary workshops. She research ed and designed children’s pro grams including a butterfly gar den and a backyard habitat for wildlife. Following this intern ship, she decided to add agricul tural education as a second major. “I enjoyed focusing on chil dren and teaching them about the environment,” she says. “I hope to educate young children about caring for the future.” Rogers has been applying what she learned in her horticul ture classes to managing The Farm Meadows Nursery in Hockessin, Del. During the bast year and a half on the job, she has noticed an increasing interest in native plants for landscaping and say it reflects a desire for low maintenance and environmental compatibility.
