Simmental Capital Futurity Winners Named HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) Winners in the Simmental Capital Futurity Contest took home prize money at the 38th Annual Keystone International Livestock Exposition (KILE). Held at the State Farpi Show Complex in Harrisburg from October 3-10, KILE has estab lished itself as a premier showcase for the nation’s top livestock breeders. Participants in the Simmental Capital Futurity Contest nominate their farms by January 1, and nominate calves by May 1 for showing in October at KILE. Three judges evaluate the animals using a point system to determine winners. In this year’s Futurity, Senior Champion Bull paid $4OO and Reserve Champion Bull paid $250. Junior Champion Heifer and bull each paid $l,lOO. The animals are shown clipped and cleaned, with no artificial sub stances used. Grand Champion Senior Bull was won by Shoemaker’s Dream Jet, owned by William Shoemaker of Harrison Township, Bedford County. The bull tops 1610 pounds at 18 months, having been born on March 25, 1993. “It’s genetically leaner meat,” Mr. Shoemaker said. Lee and Linda Snyder of Franklin, Venango County exhib ited the Grand champion Bull in the Junior Division and Reserve Champion Heifer in the Senior Division. The Snyders started the Capital Futurity Contest and have man aged it since it began with the first show in 1990. With only eight years in the business, the Snyders have the distinction of showing the only Simmental Supreme Champion in the Pennsylvania State Farm Show’s Beef Cattle Division. Ken and Jeanne White of Gro ton, New York won the Champion Senior Heifer Class with Simme Valley Chanelle, bom in February of 1993. Chanelle was also the Reserve Champion Calf at last year’s Capital Futurity Contest at KILE. John Lenzner of Sewickley, Allegheny County owns Harvest Lenzner Princess, the Grand Champion in the Junior Heifer Class. He is also part owner of Harvest Fancy, International Champion at the American Royal Show in Kansas City in 1993. He began purchasing cows in Janu ary, 1994. Bob and Alice McQuiston of Stoneboro, Mercer County exhib ited Harvest Sophie, the winner in the Senior yearling Heifer Class. The McQuistons show out of the 200-acre Havenwoods Farm. Jerry and Ginger Woolcock of Orangeville, Columbia County exhibited winners in the Junior Division. WF Rock Solid, born in February of 1994, was Reserve Champion Bull and WF Snow White Vision, born in January of 1994, won Reserve Champion Heifer. The Simmental Capital Futuri ty Contest has paid out in excess of $35,000 in prize money over the past 4 years. In 1995, the con test will be open to Simmental breeders nationwide.
