I don’t know about you, but
fall is my favorite time of the
year. The weather is pleasant
with warm days and cool
nights. The fall foliage bright
ens the landscapes but, most
importantly for us com grow
ers, it’s harvest time.
If your operation is any
thing like ours, this year’s com
harvest also marks the begin
ning of the planning stage for
next year. As we harvest the
crop, we are also analyzing
what hybrids we’ll continue to
plant and which ones we’ll
discard, which herbicides per
formed best, and which tillage
methods worked best, along
with a whole host of other
things.
I think two of the things that
farmers enjoy most about
farming are: 1) being able to
actually see a physical product
that they have produced and
have the satisfaction of know

world, and 2) always having
the challenge of trying to do
better next year whether
you’re producing com, milk,
hay, or any other farm com
modity. This is why harvest
time is so enjoyable to me.
When you look at the crop
that you’ve produced with a
certain degree of satisfaction,
you’re already trying to figure
what you can do better next
year to grow an even bigger
crop.
Planning is one of the most
important aspects of farming
today. You’ve probably all
heard that farmers are the only
group that buys retail and sells
wholesale. Because farmers
can’t pass their increased costs
on to the consumer, we need to
produce our product more effi
ciently each year. As farmers,
we need to gather ail the infor
mation available in order to
make the best possible deci
sion each year.
