York Co. Correspondent
YORK (York Co.) Though
admittedly tired, Jeff Roche wore
a broad smile on his face as he
milked the family show string at
the close of the York Fair’s dairy
show, on September 15.
Just a few minutes before, the
family’s aged cow, “Unicorn
Kayel Alice,” had won the Rutter
Dairy Memorial Award, present
ed annually to the fair’s Supreme
Dairy winner in memory of M.
Ebert Rutter.
It was the second time the
EX93-2E cow had won the
Supreme horlor, earning her first
year-long ownership of the
revolving plaque in 1991. She
calved in July, after completing
her six-year lactation records of
over 23,000 milk and 800-plus
fat.
Alice has earned several high
placing awards for the Jeff and
Mary Kay Roche family. New
Oxford, on the show circuit so far
this season. She was first in her
aged-cow class at the Southcen
tral District Holstein Show, first
and senior champion honorable
mention at South Mountain Fair
and seventh at the state Holstein
show.
Chosen as the Reserve
Supreme Champion was the Jer
sey breed champion “Top-O-Hill
Admiral Precious.” Precious is a
junior-two-year-old, bred and
exhibited by Mildred Seeds,
Downingtown. As Reserve
Supreme winner, the exhibitor of
the stylish Jersey entry was pre
sented a special plaque awarded
annually by the William Everhart
family in memory of Beatrice
May Ball and Catherine May
Kurtz.
York Fair dairy judges Jeff
Myers and Steve Wilson, both
from Maryland, teamed up to
make the selections of the
Supreme and Reserve supreme
winners from the fields of six
competing dairy breed champi
ons.
A ten-year-old, “Rutter Bros.
Jubilees Teddibear” took champi
on honors in the Guernsey breed
show for long-time York fair
exhibitors Rutter Bros, of York.
Roy Coale, Felton, exhibited
the champion in ayrshire compe
tition, winning with his three
and-four-year old dry cow, “DVC
Jasmine Mo Zart.”
Winner of the Brown Swiss
top title was “Joyel Blaster
Heidi,” a senior two-year-old
bred and exhibited by Glenn and
Gary Crowl, Airville. The Crowl
brothers showstring also included
the Milking Shorthorn breed
champion, “Three Spring Erin
EXP,” a dry three-and-four-year
old.
