Though admittedly tired, Jeff Roche wore a broad smile on his face as he milked the family show string at the close of the York Fair’s dairy show, on September 15. Just a few minutes before, the family’s aged cow, “Unicorn Kayel Alice,” had won the Rutter Dairy Memorial Award, present ed annually to the fair’s Supreme Dairy winner in memory of M. Ebert Rutter. It was the second time the EX93-2E cow had won the Supreme horlor, earning her first year-long ownership of the revolving plaque in 1991. She calved in July, after completing her six-year lactation records of over 23,000 milk and 800-plus fat. Alice has earned several high placing awards for the Jeff and Mary Kay Roche family. New Oxford, on the show circuit so far this season. She was first in her aged-cow class at the Southcen tral District Holstein Show, first and senior champion honorable mention at South Mountain Fair and seventh at the state Holstein show. Chosen as the Reserve Supreme Champion was the Jer sey breed champion “Top-O-Hill Admiral Precious.” Precious is a junior-two-year-old, bred and exhibited by Mildred Seeds, Downingtown. As Reserve Supreme winner, the exhibitor of the stylish Jersey entry was pre sented a special plaque awarded annually by the William Everhart family in memory of Beatrice May Ball and Catherine May Kurtz. York Fair dairy judges Jeff Myers and Steve Wilson, both from Maryland, teamed up to make the selections of the Supreme and Reserve supreme winners from the fields of six competing dairy breed champi ons. A ten-year-old, “Rutter Bros. Jubilees Teddibear” took champi on honors in the Guernsey breed show for long-time York fair exhibitors Rutter Bros, of York. Roy Coale, Felton, exhibited the champion in ayrshire compe tition, winning with his three and-four-year old dry cow, “DVC Jasmine Mo Zart.” Winner of the Brown Swiss top title was “Joyel Blaster Heidi,” a senior two-year-old bred and exhibited by Glenn and Gary Crowl, Airville. The Crowl brothers showstring also included the Milking Shorthorn breed champion, “Three Spring Erin EXP,” a dry three-and-four-year old.
