Riley has announced that the small Caribbean island nation of St Lucia is looking to develop its poultry industry and become less dependent on bananas. “It is my understanding that the people in St. Lucia are looking for a buyer for a white meat surplus that they forecast will be about 4.4 million pounds per year. At the Industry Watches As Fall Market Approaches DENVER, Colo. Sheep producers na tionwide are reporting mixed success during lambing and say they’ll take a wait-and-see attitude in predicting the fall market. But, while sheep numbers aren’t giving a clear in dication what producers can expect in fall marketing, climbing lamb prices in some re gions and an overall boost in wool values are spreading some optimism throughout the in dustry. Some states in the Rocky Mountain region Montana, Idaho and Colorado and Wisconsin reported a good lambing season, with numbers up slightly from past years. Other states reported moderate downtrends or steady lamb numbers. Overall, mixed re ports nationwide will likely mean lamb num bers will remain steady as compared to last year. The way the fall lamb market shapes up is going to depend a lot on how many people stay in the sheep industry despite the phase out of the Wool Act, said ASI Market Anal yst Steve Meyer. “If there’s a lot of disinvest ment, there are not going to be the lamb sup plies.” Loss of producer numbers in the sheep in dustry was reflected in reports from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and northern Massachusetts, where lamb numbers were up, but the availability of feeders is down overall, and producers are being forced out side the area to New York, Ohio, and Penn sylvania to buy them. “There are a lot less lambs available be cause people have gotten out of the business and those that aren’t (out) are about to,” said Tom Bennet, state executive for the Vermont Sheep Breeders Association and member of the Yankee Shepherd Co-op. He says within the co-op, “We’ve had a hard time putting our hands on lambs, and it looks like that’s going to get worse not better.” Meyer said that overall there has been a nine percent decrease in total sheep numbers and an 11 percent decrease in stock ewes. He points out that along with the decrease in population, the numbers of old ewes being shipped to Mexico has stayed level. Taken together, this means less ewes in the U.S. breeding flock. However, if the lambing per centages are good as a nationwide average, Recorded Grade 0-3 Mentha Exc. Eric & Arlene Bennett. Recorded Grade 3-4 Monthe 1. Matthew Menold; 2. Michael Shlmp. Poultry same time they want to purchase dark meat on a quid quo basis from the purchaser of their breast meat. The islanders prefer the darker poultry meat," Riley said. “I think there is a strong poten tial here for a cooperative effort with a Maryland company that would generate an enormous amount of economic activity for Maryland’s economy,” said Riley. St. Lucia is looking to sign a ten year contract for the dark meat-white meat exchange. In addition, St. Lucia will purchase hatching eggs, animal medicines, supplies, feed supplements, gjhins, and equipment to get their poultry industry off the ground.
