    Summer Fun At The
1994 Maryland State Fair
The 113th Maryland State Fair
is a sure bet for summer food, fun,
and celebration. This 10-day festi
val complete with home arts de
monstrations, agricultural and
livestock presentations, midways
chills, live entertainment and
horse racing will open Saturday,
August 27 and run through Mon
day, September 5 at the Timonium
Fairgrounds in Baltimore County.
The fairgrounds open at 8 a.m.
for livestock and horse shows, de
monstration halls open at 10 a.m.,
and the Midway opens at 11 a.m.
on weekends and noon on week
days.
The Maryalnd State Fair is an

Happenings

tions which are sure to captivate
visitors of all ages. Fairgoers are
invited to explore the Farm and
Garden, 4-H, and Home Arts
Buildings, the Cow Palace, Horse
Show Ring, and other agricultural
buildings and displays as well as
the Exhibition Hall.
The Stale Fair is the culmina
tion of over a year’s worth of hard
work for 4-H members who will
compete in shows and demonstra
tions throughout the Fair. The 4-H
Livestock Show will begin Satur
day, August 27 and run through
Wednesday, August 31. The 4-H/
FFA Livestock Sale will begin
Wednesday, August 31, at 7 p.m.

The Open Class Livestock Show
will open Thursday, September 1,
and run through Labor Day.
Fair Pass
The Schuylkill County Fair As
sociation announced their sale of
one person week-long fair passes.
This $6 pass will admit the same
person each day to the Schuylkill
County Fair, scheduled Monday,
August 7 - Saturday, August 13.
A new admission system will
be used at the fairgrounds this
year. Vehicles will enter the
grounds and be parked immediate
ly. Visitors will then enter the fair
grounds through one of three ad
mission gates. This new system
will help eliminate a safety hazard
of vehicles stopped on Route 895.
Anyone more than six years of
age will be charged $2 admission.
On Wednesday, August 10, Senior
Citizens Day, all seniors will enter
free until 4 p.m. Also, a special
handicapped entrance will be pro
vided.

negotiated witih a neighboring
property owner. However, partici
pants are still urged to carpool be
cause parking may be limited on
busy evenings.
Week-long passes will not be
available after Sunday, August 7.

ed at the fair.

List describes six corporate-spon
sored culinary competitions. They
are listed as “Special Contests”
under the Home Products section.
Two of the contests. Land O
Lakes Light and No Fat Sour
Cream “Quick Bread” and SPAM
“Best Recipe,” are state level
competitions with winning recipes
forwarded to national test kitch
ens. Placing entries at the fair can
win up to $lOO. The national Land
O Lakes winner will receive $5OO
and a year’s supply of products.
The SPAM national finalist will
win a trip for two to anywhere in
the world SPAM is sold plus
$l,OOO in cash.
New this year, the locally-oper
ated Clover Hill Winery and Vine
yards is sponsoring a “Cooking
With Wine” contest. Entrants may
prepare an appetizer, entree, or
dessert. Place winners will receive
gift baskets from Clover Hill.

at the fair office behind the Ritz
Barbecue on the fair grounds
weekdays between 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
