814-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 23, 1994 FFA HAPPENINGS Manor FFA This year the Pennsylvania FFA Association celebrates the 65th anniversary of the FFA. Approximately 1,250 FFA members and their advisors trav elled to Penn State University to attend the Pennsylvania State FFA Activities week, June 14-16. Twenty-one Manor FFA mem bers and their advisers (Gus Birchler, Carole Fay, and Mike Burton) travelled to Penn State University to compete in several activities and contests. Teams who placed first in these contests are eligible to compete in the National FFA Contests in Kansas City, Mo., in November. Teams which placed second in the contests compete at the east ern region FFA contests, which are held in conjunction with the Eastern States Exposition in Springfield, Mass, in September. • Meats judging contest - Tom Karr, 2nd gold; Neil Fellenbaum, 3rd gold; Keith Hoover, 4th gold; and Keith Frey, sth gold. The meats team placed Ist and will compete in the National FFA Meats Contest in Kansas City. In the meats judging contest, stu dents identify retail cuts, quality and yield grade meats, and judge cuts of meat and carcasses. A written test is also part of the con test. • Poultry judging- Joel A. Frey, Ist place gold; Seth Perry, 3rd place gold; Erik Ober Bth bronze award; Jason Troup, 10th bronze award. • The poultry team placed Ist and will compete in the National FFA Meats Contest in Kansas City in November. In the poultry contest, students identify chicken parts, judge live birds, grade eggs, chicken patties, and other poultry products. • Agricultural mechanics - Barry Graver, 2nd place gold award; Neil Ebersole, Bth place gold award; Dwane Graver, 24th place award; The team placed sec ond and will compete on the national level at Eastern States Exposition in September. Nel Proficiency Award went to Jay Hese. sists of identification of cheeses, real and artificial products, deter mining off-flavors in milk, and taking a written test. Each year, students of the Penn Manor Agriculture Department are involved with a project of their choice. Projects can include the raising of a crop or animal, gar dening, or employment in an agri culture-related business. The stu dents keep records on the projects and at the end of the year can compete for a variety of awards. The students complete applica tions which are referred to as pro ficiency applications. These appli cations are judged on the local, county, and regional level. Jay Hess’s application and accurate and complete records on his swine production project advanced to the state level and were evaluated during FFA week competition at Penn State. Jay was interviewed by a committee of teachers, alumni, and state FFA staff. Jay was selected as the swine proficiency winner for the state of Pennsylvania. His appli cation will now advance to the national level, where he will com pete against the other state win ners in swine proficiency in the northeast region of the FFA. If Jay’s application is selected, he will be one of four finalists to compete in Kansas City, at the National FFA Convention. Jay is the son of Mr. &Mrs. Abram Hess, Conestoga, where he is involved in swine production with his parents. Stephanie Graham was respon sible for recording all of the FFA activities in the FFA scrapbook. This year the scrapbook received a silver award. Manor FFA Chapter competed against all of the other FFA chap ters of the state in the superior chapter competition. Each FFA Chapter completes an application, which is evaluated by a commit tee of teachers and state FFA staff. This year Manor FFA chap ter received a gold award based on the activities and accomplish ments of our FFA members. The chapter will be cqmpeting on the national level and will be recog nized at the National FFA Convention in Kansas City. West Snyder FFA Parliamentary Procedure Team Places Third The West Snyder FFA par liamentary procedure team recently placed third in state com petition at the Pennsylvania State University. Glendon Carper, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Carper of McClure, served as president of the West Snyder FFA Parliamen tary Procedure Team which placed third in the state with a silver medal. Other members of the Par liamentary Procedure Team included Eric Leitch, son of Mr. and Mrs. lan Leitch of Beaver Springs; John Ewing, son of Mr. Clay Ewing, McClure; Lori Car per, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Carper of McClure; Joshua Heeter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Heeter, Beavertown; Jennifer Woodling, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Woodling of Troxel ville; Ben Boonie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Boonie of Beaver Springs; and Jodi Moist, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Moist of Beavertown. Elizabethtown FFA On Thursday, May 19, the Eli zabethtown FFA Chapter held its 35th annual awards program. Seventeen members were awarded the Greenhand FFA Degree, symbolizing their first year in FFA. Kristen Hoffman, a freshman, was given the Star Greenhand for an excellent first year. The Chap ter FFA Degree, of which eight members were awarded, was given to those continuing agricul tural education and meeting spe cific qualifications. Gene Barton was given the Star Chapter Award. Barry Shaw, pres ident of Wenger Feeds, received the Blue and Gold Award. This award is given to a member of the community who has served the FFA chapter for a number of years. Various awards were given to FFA members for special achieve ments. Special holdiay sales awards were given to the top three salesmen in the chapter’s annual fruit sale. This year’s winners were Don Heck, Nheel Dreher, and Steve Shull. Proficiency awards were given to students who excelled in specif ic areas of agriculture. Peter Hof fines, Heather Oberhltzer, Jason Cotton, Matt Umbrell, Lele DeShong, Ken Bellock, Amy Espenshade, Jason Wivell, and Matt Zimmerman were among the winners. Amy Espenshade, president of the FFA chapter, was presented with the DeKalb Achievement Award. This award is given to a senior who has achieved great goals in the FFA. Each year, the FFA participates in state judging awards at Penn State. These students were recog nized at the banquet for last June’s achievements: Amy Espenshade, Lee DeShong, Heather Obeiholt zer, Kyle Buchter, Corey Roth, Mike Gockley, Peter Hoffines, Gene Barton, Matt Zimmerman, Andy Myers. Dover FFA Members Win State Awards Fourteen Dover Area High School students joined more than 1,300 other FFA members and their adivsers at the 65th annual Pennsylvania FFA Summer Convention and Activities Week held on the campus of The Penn State University on June 14-16. Four individuals and one team received top awards for their efforts. Lester Baney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Baney, received sec ond place individual honors in the Small Gasoline Engine Contest. Jed Smyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Smyser, also received individual honors, placing sev enth. Both students had a com bined score high enough to place the Small Engine Team second in the state. The Small Gasoline Engine Contest required teams, which had qualified through local, coun ty and area competition, to ana lyze engine problems, correctly repair those problems, calculate the cost of repair, and present their information to the “cus tomer.” Brian Smyser, son of Mr. and Mr. Rodney Smyser, received third place honors in the Pennsylvania FFA State Judging Contest. With teammates Marc LaFlamme, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry LaFlamme and James Shultz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Shultz, the Dover FFA Dairy Judging Team placed 18th. The Dairy Judging Contest required students to evaluate pro duction records, place classes of dairy animals, conduct linear evaluation and complete a written exam. One hundred students and 25 teams participated in this year’s event. Mike Boyer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Q. Smith, received gold medal recognition for his participation as a chapter dele gate. Mike served with 60 other FFA members in preparing rec ommendations for the state FFA Association as they organized the program of work for the 1994- 1995 year. Items included the preparation of a budget, establish ment of convention procedures and election of new student offi cers. In the State Horse Judging Contest, team members Kristi Ryder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Weir Ryder, Sr., Kelli Macdonald, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Garen Macdonald, Missy Meckley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Meckley and Laura Lease, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hilbert placed eighth. These team events required con testants to place three classes Sf pleasure horses and answer tech nical questions about them, identi fy equipment used in the horse industry, and complete a written examination on the anatomy and management of horses. Eighty two FFA members participated in this activity. The Agriculture Salesmanship Contest required students to con duct a sales presentation on a product selected by the student, complete an objective test on knowledge of professional sales processes, and complete job appli cation and cover letter. Two Dover FFA members were con testants: Lisa Churchill, daughter of Carol Churchill and Gigi Burger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Burger. Jon Bish, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bish, and Jason Brubaker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Brubaker, placed 11th and 18th respectively in the State Agronomy Contest. During this contest, Jon and Jason identify weeds, crops, insects, and diseses which affect agronomic crops. Additionally they provided rec ommendations for control of these weeds and pests by utilizing the Pennsylvania Agronomy Guide. Larry Redding and Nick Stollar, agriculture education teachers at Dover Area High School, accompanied the group and served on the Nomination Committee and the Ag Sales Contest Committee. Antique Flea Market SOMERSET (Somerset Co.) The Somerset County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring its 24th annual Antique Flea Market, Saturday, August 13, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. More than 80 antique dealers will be displaying quality antiques and collectibles. Antique vendors and food vndors will be located on E. Union Street and the parking lots and side streets sur rounding the courthouse. Tours of the Somerset County Courthouse will also be available free of charge to the public.
