812-lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 9, 1994 Kim Million BETH MILLER Cumberland Co. Correspondent CARLISLE (Cumberland Co.) When Kim Orris performs her new duties as Cumberland Coun ty’s 1994 Dairy Princess, she can speak from the heart and from ex perience. For one thing, she is the third generation of her family to work the Orris farm near Bloserville. As dairy princess, she said she is looking forward to meeting a lot of people so she can tell people what dairy farmers to and about the important product their cows produce. She did just that during the county dairy princess pageant. Or ris prepared a speech that covered the history of the dairy animal. She also looked to the future and speculated on what the dairy in dustry of tomorrow might be like. She knows plenty about the dairy industry of today since she helps every day on the two farms owned by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Orris. Those two farms total about 100 acres each. In addition, the Orrises rent another 400 acres. Kim’s main daily chores are to chip in with the milking of the family’s 54 Holsteins and helping in the fields. On top of that, she cares for her own 11 goats. Her 14-year-old brother, Kevin, and 9-year-old sister, Kadie, both help on the farm as well. Off the farm, Kim, who is a 1993 Big Spring High School graduate, is very interested in a variety of activities, including horseback riding, hunting, fishing, and cooking and sewing. She put her sewing skills to good use when she made the gown in 4-H that she wore in the dairy pnncess pageant. This summer, she will be going with other Cumberland County 4-H’ers on an exchange trip to Maine. Other 4-H activities she has at tended include Stale Days for Fashion Revue, Capitol Days, and the Texas 4-H exchange. She also is a 4-H day camp counselor and a 4-H ambassador. She plans to attend Central Penn Business School to study computerized accounting. Three Dairy Maids were named (left-right) Heather Carman, Becky Cornman and LeAnne Haycock and these new Dairy Maids will assist the 1994 Dairy Princess In carrying out her duties.
