According lo Arden Tewks
bury, manager of Progressive
Agriculture Organization (Pro
Ag), the American Journal of Pub
lic Health reports that diets high in
margarine and similar foods sub
stantiates what Pro Ag has been
claiming for several months.
According to the Health Jour
nal, the trans fatty acid found in
margarine and other similar foods
are probably worse then saturated
fats. Tewksbury said, the Journal
quotes Dr. Walker Willett, a Har
vard researcher, as claiming par

A Victory For Dairy
bu substituting margarine in their
diets.
A Pro Ag official said, the Com
munity Nutrition Institute reported
in their House organ (nutrition
week) on March 12, 1993 that the
1987 Harvard Nurses study found
that women who consumed four or
more teaspoons of margarine a day
had a risk of heart disease SO per
cent higher than women whose
margarine intake was limited to
once a month. Those odds went to
70 percent by increasing the intake
of margarine.
According to the Search for
Health Journal, Dr. Mary Enig and
others at the University of Mary
land have been concerned about
years of combined dairy promot
ing in Beaver and Lawrence
Counties.
There are four contestants for
the pageant this year. They are
Jennifer Brown, the daughter of
Kenneth and Judy Brown of Vol
ant; Gwendolyn Harman, the
daughter of Wendell and Kather
ine Harman of New Castle;
Roberta McConnell, the daughter
the link between vegetable fat and
the acceleration of breast and col-
on cancer.
Tewksbury said the real prob
lem doesn’t appear to be vegetable
oils per say but when hydrogen
is bubbled* through these oils to
make them solid, a new fat is form
ed, called trans-fat This trans-fat
is not a natural fat and could be re
sponsible for destroying good cho
lesterol.
In addition, according to
Tewksbury, the May 28, 1993 is
sue of the CN.l.’s (Consumer’s
Nutritional Institute) Nutrition
Week has called on McDonald’s
and other fast food changes to
eliminate their present cooking oil
and return to the old cooking oil of
animal tallow.
The Pro Ag leader feels the new
revelation will place the dairy
farmers on a level playing Held
of John and Lois McConnell of
Volant; and Farm Weltner, the
daughter of Albert and Carol
Weltner of Georgetown.
Before the pageant each contes
tant will be interviewed by a panel
of three judges. During the
pageant the contestants will either
give a presentation or a speech,
and answer an impromptu
question.
