Dave and Matt Young, partners in Red Knob Farm in Peach Bottom, were recognized as the Outstanding Young Farmers over 30 by the Solanco Young Farmers at their 15th annual awards banquet held March 24 at the Memorial United Methodist Church in Quarryville. Dave and Matt are in partner ship with their father, Henry Young, on their 435-acre farm with 333 Holstein milk cows. The active member award was presented to Steve Aument of Quarryville. Aument has been active in the chapter demonstra tion plot, com contest, and is the outgoing chapter president. This year’s Chapter Apprecia tion Award was presented to Sky view Laboratory, Jennerstown, for their support of the Young Farmer program. Verdene Kiser attended the banquet and received the engraved plaque on behalf of Skyview, which was presented to then in appreciation of their support. Awards were presented to the following winners in the annual corn production contest; Rick Brcnncman, Quarryville, pro duced 176 bushels of shelled com per acre to win the grain division; H. Grant Troop, Quarryville, was second with 164 bushels; and Ed Zug, Peach Bottom, was third with 162 bushels per acre. Rick Brcnncman also received the award for the highest grain yield average for the past three years with 173.2 bushels. In the com silage division, Ed Zug placed first with 26.9 tons per acre of 6S-pcrcent moisture com silage; Scott Brinton, Peach Bot tom, was second with 24.9 tons per acre; and Steve Aument, Quar ryville, placed third with 24.6 tons per acre. The dairy production awards were presented to the following winners; Joe DeLong, Quarryvil le, received the top Holstein herd award with 12,040 pounds of milk, DeLong also had the most improved herd for milk and pro tein. Rick and Mim Brenneman, Quanryville, had the high cow for milk production with 30,166 pounds of milk; and a cow owned by Ed Hamish and daughter Jill, Christiana, produced 9SI pounds of protein to earn the high Hols tein for protein production.
