LINDA WILLIAMS Bedford Co. Correspondent BEDFORD (Bedford Co.) Dairy maid at 13 and state Jersey Queen at 16, Janelle Koontz is on her way to Louisville in Novem ber. The daughter of Wayne and Kathy Koontz of Stan El Jerseys, Bedford RD 4, Janelle is realizing her dream of being a Jersey Queen. Crowned by outgoing queen, Anna Calhoun, at the Pennsylva nia Jersey Catde Club’s annual meeting held at Bedford on April 8, Janelle is growing up on a Jer sey farm. She credits many of her suc cesses to her grandfather, the late Stanley Koontz. “I still remember how he came home from the hospital before he died and would sit in a lawn chair and coach me on how to handle my cows. He always said my cows were spoiled, but tie had a lot to do with spoiling them.” Janelle has a total of nine cows of her own and a host of ribbons and trophies to back up her enthu siasm in the Jersey industry. The Koontz family also has a state-of-the-art milking system which allows them to milk 8S cows in 114 hours. Leading a well rounded life, Janelle is a cheerleader, on the stu dent council, in chorus, the sci ence olympiad, envir-o-lhon, and teen club. She is also active in the Friendly Moo-Moo’s 4-H Club. Runners up were Emily Diet rich, a junior at Shippensburg High' School, and Angelina M. Poligardo, a senior at Meyersdale. Emily is the daughter of Bill and Susan Dietrich and resides in Newburg, Cumberland County. The owner of 13 Jerseys. Emily has shown her animals at county, district and suite dairy shows for eight years. Angelina is the daughter of Dominic and Teresa Poligardo from Meyersdale and owner of 23 Jerseys. Others in the contest included Deborah Lyn Callan, a sophomore at Edinboro University, and the daughter of Frank and Lynette Callan of Sugar Grove in Warren County; and Samantha Hillyard, a junior at Athens High School, die daughter of Ben and Kathy Hill yard and a resident of Ulster in Bradford County. She was accompanied by her brother, Leon, in a opening invo cation done in song. Joyce Bupp, corespondent for Lancaster Fanning, was the guest speaker. Giving a lively talk on the perils and pluses of dairy farm ing, Joyce, a Holstein farmer, kept the Jersey people chuckling at ho stories. She told of the cow with the prolapsed uterus they fixed with a darning needle and the water heat er they fixed with a broom handle and a rubber glove. “Farmers," Joyce said, “Find humor where there isn’t a lot” She added that, this winter, there were times when another profes sion (like welfare) looked good. “But a farm is a great place to bring up your kids,” she conclud ed. “Very few kids who grow up on a farm ever have trouble find ing a job.” Awards presented by Betsy Du puis, youth advisor, included the following: Achievement Award in the senior division were: Emily Diet rich.
