A3B-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 16,1994 Penn State Ag Advisory (Continued from Pago A 1) journalism, are needed. * Global and national ag market ing needs to be studied. ■ The College of Agricultural Sciences needs to be used as a source of public information. * The impression of a national cheap food policy needs to be addressed as it affects ag profitability. * Biotech and its effects on the marketability of food products needs attention. • Restrictions on content and labeling of alternate animal pro ducts needs to be addressed. At the Aoon luncheon, Ken Rice and Dave Seamans were honored for six years of service on the board of directors, and Bob Sams was honored for his work as the liaison between the dean’s office and the council from 1986 to 1995. Aimee Eopcchino, university scholar, winner of the Bryce Jor dan student leadership award and student council president, told of her experiences on student council and as an ag advocate for Penn State. She listed benefits of student involvement on campus to include the development of student leader ship skills and corresponding team skills learned in cooperation when others were leading. In addition, when students are involved, they have the opportunity to implement change and help make policy. Aimee also noted student involve ment in the community. For exam ple, the Dairy and Animal Science Club Christmas caroled at a nurse ing home and held an educational farm day for foster children and their families at (he ag arena. Ag industry leaders were encouraged to support students by providing internships and by get ting involved as speakers and attendees at special club activities. In the afternoon busi ness meeting, Jack Dreibelbis, treasurer, reported the association in good financial stand ing and issued an invita tion to contribute to the Bryce Jordan Student Leadership Award fund. Checks should be made payable to the Agricul tural Advisory Council and sent to Pat Heuser, 238 Ag Adminstration Bldg., University Park, PA 16802. Dean Lamartine Hood reported that Gov. Robert Casey’s state budget calls for appro priations for Penn State extension to hold at last year’s levels, but the governor’s recommen dations for research funds is reduced by 2.4 percent None of the requested funds for tele communication are in the state budget. Since 1991, Penn State’s College of Agri cultural Sciences has managed with increas ing costs and declining resources. Permanent state funding to the Col lege has decreased $1.9 million from 1991 to 1992 to the present To meet this challenge, the College has reduced the scope of its programs and number of staff and faculty. From 1990 to 1993, county staff and faculty positions have been reduced 8.3% and 13.3% respectively. The College’s 1994-1995 state budget request is less than one per cent higher than total state funding received in 1991 to 1992. Hood said it is essential that the state increase its investment if Penn State is to maintain viable research and extension programs that are critical to all die citizens of the Commonwealth. Hood also reported that the Col lege has been selected to receive one of 12 planning grants from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to parti cipate in their Food Systems Pro fessions Education Program. The general thrust of the initiative is to create a model food system profes sions education program based on the changing values and needs of a diverse Pennsylvania population. With the competition for the grant, Penn State officials are pleased to be selected by Kellogg for the work. In other business, Harry Roth, chair, reported for the College Liaison Task Force, and Everett Newswanger, chair, reported for the Communication Task Force. At the end of the day, an educa tional session on the PENpages communications network was held.
