Using Swine Waste
In Grating Programs
By incorporating intensive
grazing technology with a better
agronomic use of animal waste,
pork producers in Noth Carolina
are becoming cattlemen with
stocker grazing programs.
- Working with extension agents
in Sampson County, pork produc
ers are irrigating pasture land with
swine lagoon effluent and study
ing the performance of grazing
beef calves. Hie results have been
promising, with producers report
ing return per acre in the
$4OO-5420 range.

Benefits of low labor, less hay
making, and a release from weath
er concerns are also positive
aspects of this alternative to utiliz
ing swine waste.
The North Carolina programs
have mostly utilized coastal ber
mudagrass as,the main forage,
with fescue incorporated in some
programs. Stocking rates on ber
mudagrass ill the intensive rota

Can we do this in Pennsylva

perhaps utilizing fescues, orchard
