Md. To Host National Soil Judging Contest COLLEGE PARK, Md. Maryland will host the 34th Na tional Collegiate Soil Judging Contest, scheduled April IS on the Eastern Shore. There will be 16 universities competing. All are top teams in their respective regional contests around the nation. The precontest banquet will be held on April 13 in the Kent Nar rows area on the Eastern Shore. Dr. Richard W. Arnold, chief of soil surveys for the U.S. Depart ment of Agriculture’s Soil Con servation Service (SCS), will be the guest speaker at the banquet The awards presentation will take place the afternoon of the contest Contest coordinators arc Dr. Martin Rabenhorst, and Dr. Del vin Fanning, professors of soil sci ence at the University of Mary land at College Park. In the Northeastern Collegiate Soil Judging Contest last fall, the University of Maryland A team . placed third among six schools. The competition was held OcL 23 atPennsylvanis State University’s Rockspring Research Farm. The Penn State team captured first place with 3,537 points. Cornell was second with'3,4o7 points, and Maryland was a close third with 3,405 points. Individuals in the top 10 from Maryland were Sam Buonocore, from Pomona, N.Y., who placed third and Susanna Watson, from Bethesda, who took ninth place. The Maryland team has won two national titles in the past 34 years. However, because Mary land is the host state, the Univer sity of Maryland team will not be competing for national honors this year.
