The weather seems to be the
focus of discussion among folks
this winter. We have had to cancel
two well-planned programs at our
church and now hope that we can
hold the one in March.
Schools have cancelled classes
quite often. This reminds me of
the year when, in order to get our
children to die bus, we had to
clean the old beater-manure
spreader and haul them with the
tractor. Another winter we had no
electricity for five days, and we
melted snow for water. Luckily, at

that time, we heated our house
with a coal stove in the living
room. The dust and ashes made a
mess but we kept warm. We’ve
never had to worry about food as
our freezers and cellar shelves
were full from the summer’s
harvest.
This year our driveway has
been our main problem as snow
and ice built up on it. Our son,
Philip, has opened it with the trac
tor and snow plow several times.
The other day he and his wife,
Lisa, went cross-country skiing,
and we kept the baby. He slept
most of the time so 1 barely got to
hold him. He has a head of red hair
is growihg rapidly.

Allen has spent some of his
spare time making a pretty cherry
shelf to hand on the wall for small
antiques. It is heavy and so he
used his stud finder before hang
ing it up. He has also cracked a lot
of black and English walnuts for
me. It seems that almost every time
that I bake, I use nuts in the
recipes.

His eyesight ha'd been deterior
ating after his cataract operation
two years ago so last week he had
a laser operation and now can see
much better. It certainly is remark
able that modem medicine can
correct such problems. We never
appreciate what we have until we
lose it - be it health or something
else.
