814-Lancaster Firming, Saturday, January 29, 1994 As I write this it is snowing heavily, and we’re to have snow all day. It reminds me of the day we got married some 40 years ago this month. That time it started in the fore noon too and kept on all day. Some people could not get to the church. Others braved the ele ments but then didn’t come to the reception afterwards. Our wedding trip to Florida was postponed until the next day. I re member that my mother had a big, black coal stove in the kitchen and one of the fellows, who got stuck in the snow, sat with his feet in the oven. My father had a lot of steers to tend on another farm and he had a problem watering them. As the bam was just a stone’s throw from the Conestoga River, he drove them every day to the river. Well, this particular year he had to break thick ice on the water for six weeks as it was so very cold. Another winter that I remember was the one when ice brought down the electric wires. We had no electricity for five days and no water either. We melted snow and kept warm with a small stove that IL*. Dahl Outside ■I Wood Furnaces Hot Air and Hot Water. We didn’t begin to have the toys that many children have to day, but we managed to entertain our three little ones with toy ma chinery, dolls, and books. And, we all had to live in the one warm room. I’m sure that my husband didn’t have much fun either as he had to milk all the coyvs by hand. But, now years later jt is just something to talk about when win ter comes again.
