Gift Allows Students To Gain Research Experience NEWARK, Del. Seven un dergraduate students are working on major research projects in the University of Delaware’s depart ment of entomology and applied ecology this year, thanks to a $lO,OOO gift from the DuPont 1993-1994 Educational Aid Fund. Department chair Dr. Robert Allen said the gift was used to cre ate jobs that would give the stu dents practical experience doing research. Students benefiting from the gift are Stacey Bonvetti, Wilming Corporations Support Conservation Districts HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) Five corporations have pledged support for the efforts of county conservation districts through generous donations to the Penn sylvania Association of Conserva tion Districts, Inc. (PACD). The five companies include Pennsylvania Power and Light Company; Pennsylvania-Ameri can Water Company; Robert G. Hartman and Associates; H. Ed ward Black Associates; and Grove Associates. The companies were recognized at a banquet during PACD’s quarterly statewide exe cutive council meeting Jan. 6 at the Holiday Inn, Grantville. Bonvetti, a sophomore en tomology major with a wildlife concentration, is working for Al len on a study of the worldwide distribution and biology of primi tive wingless insects. Harris and Schantz are working for Dr. Tom Wood on a study of the basic biology of how insects ship in PACD is open to individuals, students, and busi nesses at various levels beginning at $l5. Benefits may include quar terly issues of Pennsylvania Re sources magazine, discounts on conservation products and free publications about water and soil conservation in Pennsylvania, plus meetings, educational oppor tunities and more. A professional fund raiser has been contracted to raise money for local conservation district pro grams not administered by the state. Chandler Associates of Har risburg will work to raise funds for both short and long-term support for the environmental efforts of local conservation districts. Rhodes, also a senior entomolo gy major, has a job helping Dr. Clifford Keil study a botanical ex tract that has the potential to en hance the action of biological in secticides. Santana, a freshman majoring in entomology with a wildlife con centration, works for Dr. Charles Mason. She is helping establish la boratory colonies of two phero mone types of the European com borer, a major crop pest, for a stu dy of each type’s host plant prefer ences. Wortman is helping Dr. Roland Roth analyze data on the survival and productivity of wood thrush in the university woodlot, a suburban forest fragment. He is a senior ma joring in entomolgy with a wild life concentration. Zane, a senior entomology ma jor with a wildlife concentration, is helping Keil optimize artificial rearing procedures for the Euro pean com borer in the laboratory.
