Sessions will feature several video segments presented via satellite, exercises on balancing rations, and discussions on nutrition-related topics conducted by county agents, plus a question and answer period with specialists in dairy nutrition, agronomy, and agricultural engineering. No Holes to Drill in Your Pickup. richs will focus on feeding and managing early lactation cows, mid-lactation cows, dry cows, and heifers, with emphasis on trou bleshooting metabolic problems related to dry cows and early lacta tion cows. Virginia Ishler will discus deter mining dry matter contents of for ages. Dennis Buckmaster from the engineering department will show case Penn State’s new forage parti cle size separator for the first time. This piece of equipment will pro vide better analysis of silages and total mixed rations. Agronomists Greg Roth and Marvin Hall will speak on com and alfalfa management as it relates to feeding high-producing dairy cows. Maurice Eastridge of the Ohio State University will present a video segment on fat feeding for early lactation dairy cows. Participants will visit a dairy farm via satellite, where Jud Hein richs will interview the farm own er, taking viewers into the milk house and feedroom. After looking at the body condition of several cows, Heinrichs and the farmer will analyze rations being used and troubleshoot on how to improve the herd’s overall nutrition. Back in the classroom, work shop participants will begin work ing with specific forage and grain samples to determine the best approaches to use in balancing protein and carbohydrate fractions in the diet. For this exercise, they will use a forage analysis based on a sample they brought to the work shop the first week. Workshops will start at 10 a.m. and end at 3 p.m., with an hour for lunch. A $25 registration fee includes the cost of a forage sample analysis. An additional charge will be made if meals arc provided, but this will vary with site.
